Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:15. The low tide was at 5:11. It's forecast to be a warm one this afternoon.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach just before sunrise. After snapping a few photos with my phone camera I began with a full round of The 10+ focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) focused on staying in a positive meditative state of mind when tourists would walk, run or ride by either too close, too loud (on phones) or walk in front of me without any consideration. I did pretty well staying positive and checking my reaction to them.

Next I did Standing, quietly reflecting on my connection to the ocean.

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo focused on agility and applications.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata focused on quality stance work, agility and solid basics.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

T. T. Liang Performing Tai Chi Sword

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:16. The high tide was at 10:12. There was a gentle breeze coming out of the south. We're forecast to have showers this morning.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach just before sunrise. I shot the image above as soon as I arrived on the beach with my phone camera. There was a very heavy cloud bank on the horizon. There was zero color this morning a grey washout.

I started with a full round of The 10+ and play tag (push-hands) with the ocean. I focused on consistency and health.

Next I did a Round (left side) focused on 'No-Mind' and watching my reaction as tourists walked, ran, chatted and rode bikes way too close to me. I did get a few that recognized me as a human being, others....not so much. It always amazes me how little courtesy there is in the world these days. Perhaps it's always been like this? I'm using it as fodder for checking my reaction to folks invading my tranquil space and questioning any negative reaction inside of myself. It's an ongoing project!!

Next I did SPT and cultivating with nature.

Next I did a round of Anyo Dalawa focused on good quality basic stances, footwork, punches and kicks.

Next I did a round of Seisan Kata with the same focus as I had for Anyo Dalawa.

I finished with Standing and Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

NOTE: I've realized that I really like it when the tide is coming in/up, with the exception of having to practice in the soft sand and having folks that are walking in the water refuse to change their line; if I have a camera on a tripod I get more courtesy, but not always. That is very curios to me.

Saturday Practice

The Details:

It's a warm 70 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:17. The high tide was at 9:23. There was a light and warm breeze coming from the south. The tide was coming in. I played tag with the ocean. I've come to really enjoy the beach when the tide is coming in.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach a few minutes before the sunrise to shoot the sunrise with my phone camera. There was only soft sand to practice on. I guess I've built up to it because it doesn't seem to be bothering my feet, ankles, knees or hips/back. Yay!

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on stretching out and coordinating my whole body, breathing with my Dantien and relaxed balance throughout the session.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into my Dantien for breathing and as a source for my movements. I also focused on my state of mind when tourists walked or ran past me. Some were considerate, others not so much. I focused on my reaction to them in my space and encouraged either a neutral or positive state of mind. I did pretty well.

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa focused on quality basics.

Next I did a round of Naihanchi Kata focused on the changes I'm making and the set up for the angle kicks.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I QW back to the house.

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 68 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:20. The high tide was at 8:34. There was very little beach and virtually no wind. It's Friday so I have an 8 am video meeting with Jeff. I brought my Canon camera and tripod to the beach to shoot the sunrise this morning.

The Practice:

I practiced in the soft sand because the tide was coming in. I played tag (push-hands) with the ocean. After snapping a few photos I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) focused on moving from Song and using my Dantien as the source of Jin to my limbs. I kept returning to the feeling of Song.

Next I did Standing Post Training (SPT)

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house for my meeting with Jeff.

NOTE:

I've been QW every afternoon and I've been going to the gym at least 1-2 times per week. When I don't manage to get to the gym I've resistance training here at the house with dumbbells and TRX straps. I've been much more focused on developing more and more Lean Body Mass than ever before. I've come to realize that LBM is critical for good health as we age. I'm happy that I've done as much resistance training as I have. I started regular Nautilus training in 1978 at the first Nautilus gym in Hadley that was run by Joe Mullin. I've continued to this day with only a little time off when the gyms were closed during Covid 19. Oy!

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 62 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:20. The high tide was at 7:45. There was virtually zero wind on the beach. We've got Linda coming at 10 to help with cleaning this morning.

The Practice:

The tide was high so I played tag (push-hands) with the ocean during my practice. I brought my tripod and Canon camera to shoot the sunrise.

After setting up and snapping a few photos I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) focused on staying inside (mentally) and not popping out as the tourists walk by chatting on their phones or to each other. Some of them passed within a few feet of me. Oy! The lack of consideration amazes me and seems to be a reflection of our society as a whole. Ugh!!

I recited the Taiji Classics during Parts I & II

Next I did SPT

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo focused on the quality of my punches and kicks as well as applications.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on dynamic tension and breathing from my Dantien to my fists, fingers and palms.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I returned to the house.

Wednesday, March 26, 2025

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 63 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:22. The high tide was at 6:56. I'm moving a bit slow this morning.

A bit late but I did QW to the beach right after the sun rose. On the walk to the beach I found a $10 bill on the road.

It's Wednesday so I have a scheduled guitar lesson at 11 with Shubal, although I have not received confirmation yet.

The Practice:

After snapping a photo with my phone camera I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency.

Note:

I've found that consistency often takes a back seat to intensity. Intense single exercise sessions will always be easier than daily practice. When I see folks exercising 'over the top', I also know that that level of intensity will make it almost impossible to maintain. Of course there are exceptions!

Consistency first,

Then intensity at a level that can be maintained.

Next I did a Round focused on my waist directing my arms and feet. Feeling the connection from my Dantien to my limbs with Jin flowing freely up and down the 9 Zig Zag Path through the Jin Lu.

Next I did SPT

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on sequence and consistency. Evidently I'm still confusing Anyo Apat with Anyo Anim. Oy! It's frustrating but it does give me the opportunity to monitor my reaction and attempt to stay patient. It is what it is!

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

Sunday, March 23, 2025

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 57 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:25. The low tide was at 10:00. There was a slight bit of wind from the N N/W on the beach. I was overdressed and the gentle breeze felt great!

The Practice:

I got out to the beach a little late for the actual sunrise (see above). But I'm trying to be consistent with my sunrise beach practices and I had a lot of inner dialogue  this morning; "It's Sunday, you can take a day off once in awhile etc. etc." Blah, blah, blah IMO once that starts just put you shoes on and start. There's only:

Doing and Not Doing

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency, overall health, balance and mobility.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I found myself focusing on the feeling between my palms when they were facing each other; ala "Pulling Qi" Qigong.

Next I did a full round of Standing Post Training using the Taoist training sequence, focused on breathing and Song.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on the sequence using full extension on kicks and punches.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata tuned into consistency and mobility.

I finished with Healing Qigong.

Saturday, March 22, 2025

Saturday Practice

The Details:

It's 52 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:26. The low tide was at 10:00. Very little wind.

The Practice:

I started inside reading the poem "Water" by Mary Oliver. I thought it was an appropriate reading given that I was about to go out to the beach for sunrise.

Just before sunrise I QW to the beach.

After shooting the sunrise with my phone camera (easier than a tripod and my Cannon camera) I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency, overall health, agility, mobility, relaxed balance and developing my Jin Lu.

Next I did a Round (left side) focused on The Four F's, especially function and feeling.

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo focused on correct sequence, I had questions so I did a second round to be sure I had the correct sequence.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata focused on correct form and deep stances.

Next I did a full round of Yin Style Baguazhang 1st Set focused on correct sequence, postures and consistency. It's been a bit too long since I've done this set; I've been primarily working on Yin Fu 8 Palms. They are similar, which makes the correct sequence and postures even more challenging. I work on keeping them separate and discrete.

I finished with Healing Qigong while I returned to the house.

Friday, March 21, 2025

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's a cool 52 at the house and I'll be dressing for it when I go out to the beach for sunrise. The sunrise was at 7:27. The low tide was at 9:05. It's Friday so I have a 8 video meeting with Jeff.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach for sunrise practice. It was a short practice so I can get back in time for my 8 am meeting with Jeff.

I started with a brief warm up using the first few of The 10 focused on consistency (practicing at sunrise on the beach), health and mobility.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on feeling and function.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I returned to the house for my 8 am meeting with Jeff.

Note: It was cold and windy on the beach this morning. I could really feel my right big toe. Ugh!

Thursday, March 20, 2025

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's   at the house. The sunrise was at 7:29. The low tide was at 7:24. Yesterday didn't work out for my guitar lesson so I rescheduled it for this morning at 11 am.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach around sunrise and did a brief warm up.

Next I did a Round (left side) focused on not being distracted (popping out mentally/emotionally) by the numerous passersby and the consistency of doing a Round at sunrise. The sunrise practices are super productive. I feel fortunate to be able to do them.

Next I did a round of Yin Fu 8 Palms on both sides with all 8 Changes.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

Once I got back to the house I put a GoPro 11 on a tripod and shot a video of The 10 Exercises.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach just before sunrise. After setting up my tripod and camera I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health, mobility, agility, balance and connecting with natures qi.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part II. I tuned into a meditative mind set, observing with little to no conscious thought. Marvelous!

Next I did a full round of Standing Post Training (SPT) and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa focused on the correct sequence. I had a little glitch after the progressive step.

Next I did a round of Niahanchi Kata focused on the adjustments I'm making to that Kata. I also focused on the preparation for the kicks.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I returned to the house.

Next when I got back to the house I downloaded the images from my camera to my laptop and continued to process the images.

Next I read "Halleluiah" from Mary Oliver's book of poems "Evidence" - Stay amazed at the world and nature!

Next I did acoustic guitar practice and continued to write the progress notes from this mornings practice.

Monday, March 17, 2025

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 63 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:33. The low tide was at 5:51. It's forecast to be a little cooler today.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach for sunrise this morning. There was a heavy cloud bank on the horizon. There was a little splash of color once the sun cleared the cloud bank.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health, mobility and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) stopping at the end of Part I and II. I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I. I stopped to take a few photos and chat with Nevin before returning to my Round. Stopping during the Round never helps things out. I focused on getting back to the correct inner 'feeling'.

Next I did SPT (focused on Song) and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo tuned into the quality of my basic kicks, punches and stances as well as applications.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on linking my breathing from the T'an Tien to the punches and finger strikes.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house

Sunday, March 16, 2025

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 73 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:33. The last low tide was at 5:08.

The Practice:

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency, balance, health and mobility.

Next I did a Round (left side) I started on the right side and realized that I should have started on the left side, so at the first Single Whip I changed from right to left. It's interesting how changing sides from day to day sparks awareness of long term memory, because I have to remember which side I did the day before, then the short term memory of what move I just did.

Next I did Standing Post Training and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on the correct sequence and direction of postures. I have been having some challenges with this Anyo.

Next I did a round of Sunsu Kata focused on sequence, agility and consistency.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I returned to the house.

Saturday, March 15, 2025

Saturday Practice

The Details:

It's 67 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:34. The high tide was at 10:27. It's forecast to be in the 80's this afternoon. Bonus rocket launch just as I arrived on the beach. IMO that's the best kind of rocket launch; you just show up and there it is!

The Practice:

I QW to the beach for sunrise.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health, consistency, balance and agility.

Next I did a Round (right side) tuned into my waist being the controlling axis with smooth and slow movements. I entered a calm and centered state of mind and a profound connection to nature. I gazed upon the horizon and witnessed the sunrise.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat tuned into the quality of my basics and applications.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata focused on agility, mobility, balance and leg strength.  Kusanku remains the most challenging (physically) of the American Karate-do Kata's. I remain focused on using the deepest Zen Dashi's that I'm currently capable of (without injuring myself!).

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

                                                            Walking on the beach!

I did a Round of Part III in the backyard

Thursday, March 13, 2025

Paco

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 54 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:24. The high tide was at 9:10. We have house guests for the next 4 days.

The Practice:

I went out to the beach to practice. After shooting the sunrise I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health, agility, mobility and consistency. These are special exercises and are really marvelous for health and longevity if they are done daily (a gentle reminder to myself - don't hesitate just Do Them!)

Next I did a Round (left side) I was able to stay on the left side throughout the round, Yay!

I also focused on maintaining my 'inside meditative state of mind' in spite of the tourists walking by. I find it both helpful and challenging to practice in such a public space, but practicing on the East facing beach at sunrise easily balances out the challenges. I find it especially powerful to practice as the sun is rising on the beach. I played tag (push-hands) with the ocean this morning as the tide was rising. There were several times that I had to move up the beach to keep my sneakers dry.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima focused on applications, sequence and quality stances, punches and kicks.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on agility, mobility, quality turns and progressive steps.

I finished with SPT and Healing Qigong.

Wednesday, March 12, 2025

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 54 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:38. The high tide was at 8:27. I'm up early, determined to make it to the beach to take photos and practice at sunrise. I plan on bringing my Cannon camera and a tripod.

We have guests coming in later today.

The Practice:

I QW to the beach for sunrise this morning. After shooting the sunrise I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health and consistency. Stretching not only stretches muscle but also nerves, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Stretching encourages blood flow, elasticity and overall health of tissue.

Use It Or Loose It

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into keeping my hips level and using stability around my supporting hip to assist in keeping my balance. Focusing on keeping my hips level when trying to balance on one leg was super helpful.

Next I did Healing Qigong from Wuji Posture.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat tuned into correct sequence and direction of postures and applications.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata focused on consistency.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I QW back to the house.

Tuesday, March 11, 2025

Tuesday Practice

The Azaleas are blooming in the backyard.

The Details:

It's 52 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:39. The high tide was at 7:42. I'm still adjusting to losing one hour to daylight savings time. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I've got a busy couple of days coming up. Today we've got someone from Daisy Maid coming in from 1-3 to help us clean in preparation for Melinda and Dave's.

The Practices:

I went out to the backyard and started with a full Modern Arnis Cane Warm Up using my Dragon Canes.

Next I did a round of Taiji Double Dao Form using my Dragon Canes.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ tuned into consistency, health and leg strength.

Next I did a Round (left side) feeling Song Jin throughout the form. I also tuned into expressing Peng Jin in my fingers. I had some issues with staying on the left side about 1/2 through Part II. I focused on my reaction to questioning what side I was on. Oy! Parts I & III were solid. I suspect some of what I was feeling was 'maping' in relation to the direction I was facing. I continue to use the relationship to Postures that I developed over decades at The Studio; facing north (towards the big mirror) and also which hand does the punches. Still I'm finding it challenging to alternate sides day to day and to keep on the same side that I started on. Oy Vey!

Next I did SPT and Healing Qigong>>>>>>>>

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo tuned into correct sequence and direction of postures.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata tuned into focus/no focus, stance work, agility and applications.

I finished with SPT and Healing Qigong before getting ready to drive north. I hit torrential rain and heavy traffic on the way north

Chen Pan Ling

Sponge Face on the Wall at Bloody Bay Marine Park - Little Cayman

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. The sunrise was at 6:45. The low tide was at 7:21. I've got an 11am guitar lesson with Shubal on Zoom. (Postponed until next week)

 The Practice:

There were painters again next door. They are painting the exterior of our neighbors Janet's house. So I practiced outside (always the best choice) on the front patio.

I started inside reading a poem by Mary Oliver and guitar practice. I just learned that Shubal is not feeling well today. So it'll be next Wednesday before we meet.

Next I went out to the front patio and did a full round of The Ten+ focused on consistency (that's a big deal!) and health. FYI - Whatever the modality it only works if you 'do it' regularly enough and in a sufficient quantity and quality to add to ones overall health. Clinical Dosage + Consistency = Better Health

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into a meditative state of mind (MSM) throughout the form

Next I did Standing Post Training (SPT) and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo focused on full extension on my kicks and punches as well as overall relaxed balance when kicking.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on connecting my breath from my Dan T'ien to my punches  and strikes.

I finished with Healing Qigong.

Tuesday Practice

 The Details:

It's 64 at the house. The sunrise was at 6:47. The low tide was at 6:21.

The Practice:

I QW down to the beach just after sunrise. The tide was coming in so I had to pay special attention so I didn't get my sneakers wet. I played tag with the Atlantic Ocean.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on balance, breathing and releasing tension from head to toe.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on the correct sequence, posture and direction. I had some difficulty with the sequence so I did the Anyo several times to straighten it out.

Next I did a round of Sunsu Kata focused on the quality of my basics and stances.

I finished with SPT and Healing Qigong.

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 60 at the house. The sunrise was at 6:48. The low tide was at 5:21.

The Practice:

I started inside reading a poem from Evidence. This is my third time through the book, reading one poem per day to help calibrate my thinking towards a deeper appreciation of nature and life itself.

Next I did guitar practice. I wish it was coming quicker than it is. I'm sufficiently frustrated by inadvertently muting strings when I play chords. Especially notable when I'm play C or F ...Oy!

Next I got the trash and recycling together. (It's Monday)

Next I did a bit of work on my U/W photographs. I've been working on the dive/photo trip to Cayman Brac back in 2018. I'd like to take a bit of time each morning to work on my U/W photo's and video's. I have 30+ years in the can.

We received news yesterday (Sunday 3.2.25) that Dylan and Guilia are engaged! Wow!! Wishing them all the best for a fabulous life together.

Next I did all 4 Modern Arnis Cane Anyo's on both sides (except for #4) I focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ tuned into mobility, agility and consistency.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on Song to Peng throughout the Form.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on applications and correct sequence.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata tuned into mobility and agility.

I finished with SPT and Healing Energy.

Sunday Practice

Wishing I was here this morning getting ready to go scuba diving in the Bloody Bay Marine Park just off Little Cayman. Oy!

The Details:

It's 59 at the house and sunny. Looks like a beautiful day. The sunrise was at 6:49. The last low tide was 4:25.

The Practice:

I started inside reading the first poem "Yellow" in Mary Oliver's book "Evidence"; Reminding me how precious every day is and the fact that nature is amazing! If you're not amazed, frankly you're probably not paying attention.

Next I did guitar practice and drum rudiments on a practice pad.

Next I went out to the backyard and did a round of Taiji Cane with my wooden bokken on both sides. I focused on the health benefits and using the proper sequence on both sides. This form is definitely more challenging on the left side. Oy!

Next I did a brief session of SPT and Healing Qigong

Next I did a short warm up using the first few of The 10 focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima tuned into the quality of my basics and applications.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on health, mobility, agility and sequence.

I finished with Healing Qigong.

Saturday Practice - Day 8,645 -

 The Details:

It's 56 at the house. The sunrise was at 6:50. The high tide was at 9:36,

The Practice:

I just calculated that 10,000 days from June 30, 2001 is Nov. 15, 2028. I've got a ways to go! I didn't realize how old I would be in 10,000 days! Navigating old age and retirement have been some of the most challenging aspects of this project. So far so good but I suspect that the last 1,000 days are going to be the most challenging and difficult to navigate. Oy!

I started inside with reading the last poem from Mary Oliver's book Evidence along with guitar and drum set practices.

Next I went out to the backyard and did a round of Taiji Staff, Monkey Staff and Lo Family Staff forms focused on consistency and the correct sequence using the best basics this old body is capable of.

Next I did a brief warm up using the first few of The 10 focused on health.

Next I did a Round (left side) I had several times throughout the form wondering if I'm still on the left side. Now that I have both sides feeling the same I have to keep the 'sides' separated consciously. I find that if I either space out or access a new feeling or principle that I may slip over to the 'other' side. Oy!

Next I did a round of Anyo Anim focused on quality basics, proper sequence, applications and consistency.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata focused on proper sequence and health.

I finished with Healing Qigong.
