Tuesday Practice @ The Studio

The Details:

It's a cool 54 at the house. Echo escaped late last night (it was getting dark), luckily he came back on his own. I suspect it was the promise of cookie's & greenie's and oh yeah.....it was getting dark, oh and those deer are bigger the closer you get to them. He was still dragging his long red lead. Oy!

The Practice:

Once I got to The Studio and unlocked the doors I started with Changes 5-8 (both sides) of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Mother (Animal) Set. I focused on correct posture in the correct place on the circle.

Next I did a round of Anyo Anim (#6) focused on applications, sequence and agility/mobility.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata tuned into agility, mobility, stretch and consistency.

Next I did a round of Low Family Staff tuned into shoulder health when circling the Staff around my head.

I ended with Healing Qigong.

When Nancy came in I switched gears and we started to discuss the topic (principle) of the day. I talking about 'investing in loss'. The principles I talked about today were 1. Light energy at the crown of the head 2. "Neither Hollow nor Projection". I also discussed the definition of Gong Fu = 1. Time 2. Effort 3. Patience.leading to Correct Thinking.

Afterwards we did a brief warm up using the first three movements from The 10+ tuned into separating the red from the white tissue.

Next we did a revies of 1-6 of The Dance we worked on vertical push-hands, stationary and walking as well as the beginning of Part VII.

Next we did a Round (right side) individually monitoring a specific mental focus of our own choice, returning to monitoring that particlar principle as needed. Being sure to be monitoring from a meditative point of view.

We ended with Healing Qigong

I'm journaling today's practice after lunch.

Monday Practice

 The Details:

It's 63 at the house. I've got a 8:30 video meeting with Jeff this morning. The Lynde's Well Drilling folks are coming later this morning to text our well water. I'm going to drive to Colrain for a guitar lesson.

The Practice:

I did a full round of The 10+ on The Deck. I focused on consistency and overall health. I adjust the Ba-Ji because I felt my right knee yesterday when I was training with Jeff. I think I was going too low in the Cross Leg Stance. I will continue to adjust and monitor my knees.

The water guys showed up late so I moved my guitar lesson to 1 pm and drove to Colrain right after the water guy's left.

I didn't get back home until about 3 and I realized I hadn't eaten lunch and I hadn't done a Round yet today. Believe me when I tell you that I didn't really feel like it. Oy! So....I had a little lunch and did a Round (left side) focused on 'getting it in'. I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I.

I finished with Healing Qigong

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. Jeff is scheduled to come up at 10 this morning.

The Practice:

I went out to my main practice area to do a brief warm up and a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I was mostly focused on consistency and "filling the bucket one drop at a time"'

Once Jeff showed up and I got organized we started by working on The Taiji Dance, working through a glitch in Part VII. We stayed with me Chopping (A Side) and Jeff Receiving (B Side). We did three times through and then took a break to work on something else before returning to The Dance to check and see IF we had worked on the sequence enough for the glitch to be repaired.

Next we did the Push-Hands drill that uses an elbow at an inside the upper arm pull across to push. We stayed on the right side forward.

Next we did a Session of Tapi Tapi focused on entering and exiting and Punyo Passing from right to left and vice versa. As well as the basic drill from Left to Right Side, using a Punto and Wrist Strikes.

Next we did Double Cane against a single Cane - The drill I got from Chuck Gauss back in the early 2000's before the Prof. passed.

Next we did Taiji 13 Spear. We did Drills 1 & 2 & 3 I (left side forward) #1. Heart, Shoulder, Knee, Throat. #2. Heart, Knee, Shoulder, Throat. #3. Heart, Knee (pool cue) (then switch side), Shoulder, Throat cross step in back while circling forward and Cross step in back while moving backwards.

Next we did a session of Ice Pick Drill but were unable to flush out the grip change from the side change. Hopefully next time?

Next we did 6 & 8 Count Drill. We stayed on the right side.

Next we reviewed The Dragons Back. I emphasized using the legs to move the 'wave' from foot to spine and the actual extension at the elbows and hands.

We ended by working on Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Mother Palm (8 Animal Palms) Changes #1 "Lion Opens it's Mouth" #2 "Snake Palm and introduced #3 "Bear Palm"

Jeff wasn't feeling well (upset stomach) and we were out of time (it was 12:26) so we stopped.

Mid-morning I went out to The Deck with my trusty practice partner Echo and did a full round of The 10+. I was focused on the changes that I'm making and the exercises that I'm attempting to add to The 10+ to make in a healthier daily practice.

It got too hot on The Deck so I moved to my main practice area

Once I got settled I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Parts I & II I stayed focused on feeling Jin moving freely down and up the Jin-Lu.

Next I did Changes 5-8 (both sides) of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Palm Set. I recited the names of postures when I could remember them and stayed focused on the correct sequence, direction and overall posture. I also focused on 'looking behind' myself everytime the opportunity presented itself.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on agility and mobility.

Next I did a round of Pa-Kua Knife trying to re-capture the sequence using No Mind to access the material. It's coming along but I still can't get all the way through it. Oy!!

I finished with a round of Monkey Staff focused on the correct sequence and the overall quality of my postures.

I returned to the house to journal today's practice here in this blog

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 68 at the house. It's forecast to be cooler and less humid today. I don't have anything scheduled today.

I started with acoustic guitar practice a reading a poem from 'Evidence'

The Practice:

At mid-morning I went out to The Deck and did a full round of The 10+. I've added as much as I'm going to be able to approach day in and day out. I got it all in today but felt the pressure, especially towards the end. I had all I could do to do a round of Taiji Staff. Oy!

It got too hot on The Deck so I moved to my main practice area to finish the mornings practice.

Once I got settled I did a round of Taiji Dao using a wooden broadsword.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting The Taiji Classics during Part I.

I tuned into the accurate sequence and number of postures, staying on the right side. As well as short and long term memory and monitoring the principles from a meditative point of view.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 65 at the house. We need a dump run for recyclables and a full grocery shop. We could use some sweet corn from Ciesliks Farm Stand.

NOTE:

I didn't make it to Ciesliks but we did accomplish everything else on the list plus I washed the Honda, Ginnie worked out at the YMCA and we picked up some sweet corn from Foster's. It's all good!!

The Practice:

I started inside with acoustic guitar practice

I've been consistent in my daily practice and it is coming along slowly but surely......My fingers hurt less!

Next I went out on The Deck with my trusty practice partner (Echo) and did a full round of The 10+. I recently added:

1. The Dragons Back after #7

2. The Ba-Ji after #8

3. I've also modified #9 to develop more relaxed balance and leg strength.

It was getting too hot on The Deck so I moved out to my main training area seeking shade.

Once I got to my training area I began with a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I remained focused on keeping a neutral posture with a calm and centered my TL Breathing in and out my nose.

Next I did a round of Cheng Style Baguazhang's Yin/Yang Walking focused on counting my steps and monitoring which foot/leg Swing Steps and Hook Steps.

Next I did Changes 1-4 (on both sides) of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Linking Palms. Focused on correct sequence and consistency.

Next I did a round of Anyo Dalawa tuned into fully extending punches and adding more pop and spirit.

Next I did a round of Taiji Cane using my original hard wood cane. I did Parts 1, 2, 3 on both sides. I'm working of Part 4.

I finished with Standing PT and Healing Qigong.

Tuesday Practice @ The Studio

The Details:

It's 70 at the house. The ground is wet from the low clouds and heavy dew. I'm planning on teaching this mornings Taiji and Qigong Class at The Studio starting at 8:30.

The Practice:

I got to The Sutdio and started by going through the file cabinet in my office looking for the handouts that I may want to keep. I also sorted out a few photos and other items, sort of a rough draft and I'm storing all that stuff in one place making it easier to load out to my car when the time comes.

No one was there at 8:30 so I just began with The 10. I made it up to #6 when Read showed up. We chatted and I introduced the principles of the day:

- Use Neutral Postures

- Invest In Loss

I had Read in the basic Standing Post Training Stance - Wuji - and gave the one finger test from all directions to verify whether he was in a Neutral Posture. I talked about dropping down to you feet and mentally going beyond the point of contact.

Next we did a Round (right side) focused on a tempo that wasn't too slow or fast but just right for Read. He was able to complete a full Round!

We ended with a brief Standing PT session; quiet time at the end of the Round.

After resting a little, Read was up for a Taiji Dance Review. We did Parts 1-5 with me Chopping and Read receiving with Ward Off.

We finished with a little more chatting.

Next I went to the YMCA and did a round of CYBEX then I went to Tito's to pick up lunch.

Next I drove home to eat lunch and prepare for my guitar lesson at noon.....Maybe!

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 70 at the house. Jeff and I have switched the day that we meet online to Monday morning because he has a meeting at 9 on Friday's. I have an 8:30 video meeting with Jeff this morning. The Lynde Well Drilling is coming between 10-12 to get a water sample and change the filter going into the holding tank. I may try and go down to see Paul after that. I'm baking later this morning.

The Practice:

I began with acoustic guitar practice; I'm sufficiently frustrated; I must be on the right path! Oy!!

Gong Fu (Kung Fu) = Time + Effort + Patience

The morning didn't go as planned; Jeff forgot to set his alarm and I had the wrong day written on the calendar for the Lynde's. It's next Monday 7/21! Oy!

I texted Jean about a visit this afternoon. I'm not sure if I have the emotional space to do the drive and visit. I'll see after I chill for a while.

Next I went out on The Deck and did a full round of The 10+. I've added the Ba-Ji (8-Stances). I haven't decided where I'll do them yet. Today I did them after #9. I think I'll do them after #8 and end up with Rooster Stance so I'm ready to start the Ba-Ji:

1. Horse Riding

2. Bow and Arrow

3. Taming the Tiger

4. Cross Leg

5. Empty

6. Taiji

7. Unicorn (Chi-Ling)

8. Chicken (Rooster)

It got too hot on The Deck so I moved to my main training spot near Big Greenie.

Next I did a Round (left side) at least I think I started on the left. I had a very confusing Round where I kept loosing concentration and thus the 'mapping' of the form. I've gotten the right and left side to 'feel' the same and I've been noticing that I inadvertently switch sides. Today it happened multiple times. It's good for Indomitable Spirit IF one can stay equanimous. I also used a metronome set at 65 BPM with two tones. It didn't help to verify the correct sequence like the Taiji Music w/ Master Liang counting does but it does serve to adjust the tempo and relationship between movements (the slight pause or conclusion).

Next I did Changes 5-8 of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Mother Palms

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo tuned into fully extending my punches and kicks with more focus and pop.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on improving the overall quality of my techniques and breathing.

Next I used my Dragon Canes to do 1-4 Modern Arnis Cane Anyo (1-3 on right and left)

Next I did a round of Taiji Double Dao (Broadsword) using my Dragon Canes.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I returned to the house to journal today's practice and have lunch.

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 68 at the house. We go up to the lake later today to sail. Time will tell.....

The Practice:

I started with guitar practice and reading a poem from Evidence "The Poet Always Carries A Notebook"

Around mid-morning I went out on The Deck to practice.

I started with a full round of The 10+ I continue to tweak the set attempting to enhance the overall health benefits from doing them, realizing that no matter the quality of the exercise, you still have to DO THEM DAILY or at least as consistently as your level allows. The main thing in being consistent is to access self-discipline and not really on your 'mood'.

Consistency beats intensity time and time again...no matter the endeavor! IMHO

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics in Parts I & II. I remained focused on TL Breathing in and out the nose with a focus on natural breathing only linking it to my movements when it naturally felt right. NO forcing of the breath!! As Master Choi would say "Don't bother your breathing" Good advice!

Next I did Standing PT and Healing Qigong.

Next I did Changes 1-4 of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Mother Palms. I recently ran across a video of Master Zhang Jie performing this set in a demonstration back in 1992, I attempted to incorporate some of what I saw into my Changes with some success.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito (#7) focused primarily on correct sequence. I learned this Anyo from Guro Jay Spiro the year (1987)  I attended the Michigan Modern Arnis Camp hosted by Terry (?) outside in-between buildings. The Prof. (Remy Presas) stopped us after a short while. I'm amazed that I can remember it at all. That was the only instruction I ever received on this Anyo. Luckily I've kept it up!

Next I did a round of Sunsu Katat focused on correct movements in the correct direction. This the Kata that I taught the least during my 40 year tenure as Sensei of the American Karate System. The primary way I made a living was teaching Karate.

Next I did a round of Taiji Jian (straight double edged sword) reciting the names of the postures throughout the form. I focused my eyes on the tip of the Jian.

I finished by coming inside and journaling todays practice here in this blog.

If you're looking at this, please let me know. Thanks!

Saturday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house and humid. Today is the Sunfish Regatta at SYC. Ginnie is doing registration and generally helping out. It's forecast to be a light wind day. Hopefully there will be enough wing to sail. Light and shifting winds can be very frustrating when sailing.

The Practice:

I began the day with acoustic guitar practice which if done daily produces substantial callouses. Mine are coming along nicely. Callouses on your finger tips are painful at first then once the callouses build up sufficiently playing is no longer painful. You know you're doing it but the bitter pain does not persist. Oy!

Around mid-morning I went out on The Deck to practice with my trusty assistant Echo.

I started with a full round of The 10+ I've successfully added The Dragons Back to #7, adjusted my foot position in #8 and added to #9 (single leg standing and deeper single leg squats) and #10 (3 swings & Soong Gong) I've also adjusted #3 to look behind and ending with a deep stretch aimed at the space between my arm pits and hips. I'm looking to derive the most overall health benefits to The 10+ that I can get. IMHO it's important to continually and daily adjust to your present condition at the particular day/session

Next I did a Round (left side) I've been having a challenging time with 1. remembering which side I did yesterday and 2. staying on that side without inadvertently switching to the other side. Oy! I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I. I stayed focused on feeling Soong Jin moving down and Jin moving up my bones and connective tissues.

Next I did Standing PT and Healing Qigong. Saying everything out loud to the universe at large.

Next I did a round of Anyo Anim (#6) focused on correct sequence and applications as well as full extension while punching.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata tuned into agility and mobility as well as leg strength and light body during the jumping front kicks and progressive stance work.

Next I did a round of Low Family Staff focused on shoulder health and the correct sequence.

It had started to rain so I returned inside to journal today's practice here in this blog.

If you're looking at this please let me know. Thanks!

Taiji Cane Part I w/ Sifu Roy

Ice Pick Knife Disarm drill w/ Guro Roland Rivera

An excellent vertical push hands drill

Modern Arnis Anyo Lima (5) with Sifu Roy

Friday Practice

I was treated to witness 4 deer in the front yard as I went out on The Deck to practice. They scattered as soon as I started to photograph them. The younger ones are very skittish. You can see the one of the far left running for the hills. Scaredy Cat! Within a few seconds they were all skedaddled;^)

The Details:

It's 68 degrees out and humid. It's Friday and I have an 8:30 video meeting with Jeff. During the meeting we changed our time to meet to Monday morning at 8:30 starting next week. Friday is the only morning of the week that Jeff has a 9am meeting at Second Wind.

The Practice:

I went out on The Deck to practice around mid morning and was treated to a group of 4 deer.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on lightly stretching fascia, flexibility, strength, coordination and of course consistency, which in my opinion is essential.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on what part moves and what part is stable. I also focused on Soong Jin and Peng Jin as well as breathing in and out through the nose using Taoist Longevity Breathing.(TL Breathing).

Next I did Changes 4-8 (both sides) of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Palms Set. I focused on monitoring the amount of coiling, especially in my spine. I also focused on correct sequence particular to that specific set. The first (Yin Linking Palms Set) and the second (8 Palms Set) Yin Fu Style Set's have many discreet differences and it's easy to confuse and homogenize the two sets. I'm attempting to keep the separate and unique.

Next I did a round on Anyo Lima focused on correct sequence and full extension with more pop (focus).

Next I went out to The Driveway because the next forms need more space.

Once I arrived at The Driveway I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on the 'spins' for agility and mobility. I also focused on correct sequence.

Next I did a round of Monkey Staff focused on correct sequence, agility, mobility and consistency

I've recently added a few things to my daily routine. Time will tell if I've over stepped my 'level'. If I have I will not be able to persevere (continue). I'm already at the edge of my ability to be consistent in my daily practice of all this material. It's all good because I realize on a very deep level that consistency is challenging for all of us, no matter the endeavor. Oy!

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house to journal my practice here in this blog.

If you are looking at this, please let me know. Thanks!

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house. The ground is wet from a shower overnight. I've got a guitar lesson scheduled for later this morning.

The Practice:

I began the day with acoustic guitar practice in preparation for my guitar lesson later this morning. I'm using daily practice believing that consistency wins the race! I also did a reading from Evidence "Spring".

I went out on the Deck with my trusty assistant around mid-morning to practice.

I started my practice with a full round of The 10+ focused on agility, overall health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting my version of The Taiji Classics during Part I. I contemplated the amount of memory and cognition that is necessary to get through the Round and stay in correct sequence on the correct side. All I can say is that it is substantial. The "long form" is excellent for cognition and a general 'maping' of the sequence. I experienced the pronounced demands on my memory several times. I try my best to not go to 'automatic' as in driving to the same destination repeatedly. I'm attempting to make each and every iteration different (more evolved?) that the last.

Next I did Changes 1-4 (both sides) of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Palms Set. I recited the names of the postures throughout.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on the correct sequence. I had a few 'glitches that I immediately resolved while remaining equanimous. I also imagined the applications where it felt appropriate.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata focused on full extension while punching or kicking.

Next I did a round of Taiji Cane using my original Cane. I focused on involving my lower body and feeling the movements originate in my feet, developed in my legs, directed by my waist and finally manifest at the tip of my cane. I followed the energy from my feet, through the 9 Zig Zag Path to my Cane.

I finished with a short Standing PT and Healing Qigong before returning inside to journal my practice here in this blog.

If you're looking at this please let me know. Thanks!

Tuesday Practice at The Studio

The Details:

It's 72 at the house. Apparently it rained overnight so the ground is wet. I'm going in to teach the 8:30 Taiji Class at The Studio and then down to Hatfield to see Paul. I haven't seen him yet this season.

The Practice:

I started class with a discussion about:

- The 9 Zig Zag Path

- The Jin Lu

- The Triangles of the body especially the Kua

- The angle at the elbows during Push and Brush Knee Twist

- Muscle Lock

Once everyone showed up I had Nancy, Lucy (and her dog Humphrey), Jack and Read

I started with a round of The 10+ explaining a little as we proceeded through the set.

Next we went on to do a group Round. I recited my version of the Taiji Classics during Part II.

We ended with a brief Standing PT and Healing Qigong (I led this part silently)

After class Janee and Don showed up and I had some conversation with them . I led them through a short seated Breathing Qigong. I explained TL Breathing in some detail.

Next I drove to Greenfield's Market and purchased a few things for lunch and supper.

I drove to Hatfield to visit with Paul and Jean. I got to meet his home healthcare person Prim.

I encouraged him to sit up straight or lean back against the back of a chair. He did stand once, with help from Prim. I tried "Pulling Qi" Qigong but was unable to get that happening for him. So I mainly just sat with him and visited.

I drove home to have a light lunch, rest and now I'm journaling the day's practice here in this blog.

If you're reading this please let me know. Thanks!

Yang Style Taiji 13 spear - Basic Jab and Thrust to a target with follow step

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. Nothing is scheduled today...Just all my daily practices.

The Practice:

I started by reading "We shake with joy" a poem by Mary Oliver and acoustic guitar practice.

It was late morning before I made it out to my main practice area near Big Greenie.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health and mobility/agility.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I caught myself at the end of Part I / beginning of Part II transitioning to the right side. I realize there are some specific points in the form that are more susceptible to transitioning from right to left and vice versa.

Next I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Linking Palms Changes 5-8 on both sides. I focused on the particular sequences in this form as accurately as possible. I also focused on mobility/agility as I realize more and more that there has been a change in my 70's after 9 years in retirement. You can run but you cannot outrun father time! It catches up to everyone....eventually. I consider exercise, eating well, sleeping well and having L O V E in your life is all important but in reality it just 'hedges your bet'. Doing all that does help one maintain mobility longer than the average person. In the end it's definitely worth while. IMHO

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo focused on full extension, correct sequences and applications.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata focused on fully completing one move/technique before starting the next.

I finished with Standing PT and Healing Qigong

I returned to the house to journal my practice in this blog.

If you're looking at this please let me know. Thanks!

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. It's forecast to be super hot this afternoon. I have Jeff coming at 10 for a private lesson and then there's supper at Spofford Lake.

"I have no secret of success but hard work"

The Practice:

I went out to my main practice before Jeff came and started with a brief warm up using the first few of The 10.

Next I did a Round (left side) I recited the Taiji Classics during Parts I & II. I got the sides a bit confused at the end of Part II. I remained equanimous and simply adjusted accordingly.

Once Jeff came we started with discussing tuition for private lessons and corrections for Malcolm.

Next we worked on the first row of Seisan Kata and adjusted the end of the first row (double punch) and the turn around and x block followed by double shuto's to the rear.

Next we worked on Dragon's Back: Using the lower body power and getting to express energy in the fingertips.

Next we worked on Taiji Short Cane's first row, focused on using the lower body.

Next we worked on The Taiji Dance and worked on the sequence on the second side at Part VII.

Next we worked on the first two rows of Taiji 13 Spear Set. The third row needs work!

Next we worked on two knife drills; #1 (the original) #2 (the ice pick) The ice pick drill need attention.

Next we worked on Cheng Style Baguazhangs 8 Animal Set: Changes #1 (The Lion Opens It's Mouth) & #2 (Snake Palm).

We finished and I came inside to journal today's practice and private lesson.

It's 62 at the house. There's a family party at my sister Chris' this afternoon.

The Practice:

"Self-Confidence is the first step to success. Lack of Self-Confidence is the main cause of failure."

Daily practice improves Self-Confidence. Believe in yourself......You are unique and awesome in every way!

"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken"

I started with acoustic guitar practice. I'm making some headway! Finally;^) and reading a poem from Mary Oliver's book, Evidence.

It was late morning before I made it out to my main practice area near Big Grennie.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health, strength, flexibility, coordination and agility.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Parts I & II. At the end of Part II I realized I had inadvertently switched to the right side. I stayed equanimous and simple switched back to the left side.

Next I did a round of Cheng Style Baguazhang's Yin/Yang Walking. I've been working on the correct split of the 5 sets that I know and connecting them to the daily practice of the 8 Modern Arnis Anyo and 8 American Karate Kata's. I'm starting with Yin/Yang Walking for #1. I'll proceed through all the sets along with the 8 Anyo's and 8 Kata's. Next I'll need to attach the weapons forms that I know and possibly to discreet Qigong's also.

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa tuned into fully extending my punches.

Next I did a round of Niahanchi Kata focused on the changes that I'm making to that Kata.

I finished with Standing PT and Healing Qigong

I returned to the house to journal today's practice in this blog.

Friday Practice - 4th of July -

The Details:

It's 59 at the house. It's Friday so I've got an 8:30 video meeting with Jeff. (No meeting this morning)

The Practice:

Quote of the day: "Victory won't come to me unless I go to it" There is only:

                                                          Doing - Not Doing

I started up in the loft as I was waiting for Jeff (No Meeting this morning) with The 10+ focused on health and consistency.

Next I went out to my main training spot near Big Greenie.

I did a Round (right side) reciting The Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on Slow and Smooth with a light energy at the crown and TLBreathing in and out through the nose.

Next I did a round of Cheng Style Baguazhang's Old 8 Palms with one circle on each side switching upper body techniques at the appropriate place on the circle. I tuned into the health benefits from practicing this form and used a modified Mud-Wadding Step throughout the Set.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on full extension in my punches and kicks.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on breathing. I experimented with in and out through the nose and in through the nose and out through the mouth making an audible sound (Haaa) as I exhaled.

I finished with Standing PT and Healing Qigong...

I returned to the house to journal my practice here in this blog.

魏樹人 太極22式 Wei ShuRen Yang Style Tai Chi 22 form Sydney

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 66 at the house. Zack is here with a crew and equipment to re-do the stairs leading up to the back door. I'm going into Bernardston to Sweet Lucy's Bakery this morning. Lots of activity at the GilRoy Farm this morning!

I'm hoping to make it to the YMCA at some point to do a round of CYBEX strength training. But I may just do a dumbbell and TRX Strap session here at the house. Hmmmm!

The Practice:

"There is no such thing as great talent without great will power."

IMHO

"Those that rely on motivation to practice will have less results than those that have self-discipline."

It was late morning before I went out on The Deck to practice. There was a rain shower that moved through.

I started while it was still raining with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistent, daily practice for overall health. Consistency wins over intensity time and time again. IF you are looking to use Qigong and Neigong for health, practicing daily is an essential element. My advice is to realize that consistency will demand self-discipline....Period!

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on the health benefits of conscious abdominal breathing (TLBreathing) and Zhong Ding throughout the form.

Next I did Changes 4-8 (Pheonix, Rooster, Chi-Ling and Monkey) of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Animal Set. I focused on correct sequence and technique to the proper direction.

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo focused on correct sequence and overall quality of techniques.

Next I did a round of Sunsu Kata focused on using good quality basics, agility, mobility and sequence.

I finished with Healing Qigong. I returned to the house to journal my practice in this blog.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house. The ground is wet. I called Sweet Lucy's Bakery and Shubal this morning.

The Practice:

I went out to The Deck around mid-morning with my trustee helper Echo to practice.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on correct head position and breathing in and out through the nose as well as imagining the applications throughout the Round.

Next I did Changes 1-4 (both sides) of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Animal Set. I focused on consistency and the overall quality of my postures as well at the particulars of Cheng vs Yin Style Baguazhang Sets.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on sequence and applications. This is one of my favorite Anyo's! I did question how many 'step back and middle blocks' and how many lunge punches that are in this Anyo. I came up with more is better especially if you're attempting to use Modern Arnis as a base art; more basics are better than less. IMHO

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata focused on mobility and agility. The is a physically challenging Kata as one ages. Yup!

I finished with Standing PT and Healing Qigong as I returned to the house to journal my practice in this blog.

If you're looking at this post please let me know. Thanks

Tuesday Practice at The Studio - Day 8,767

The Details:

It's 72 at the house. I'm going into The Studio to teach Taiji and Qigong Class this morning.

The Practice:

I drove into Greenfield around 7:30. Once I arrived and parked I deposited a bag of trash in the buildings Dumpster.

Next I unlocked the doors on Osgood and Federal Street, The Studio and opened all the windows and started the fans. It was hot in the room.

Next I did 4-8 Changes of Baguazahang's Yin Style 8 Palms Set. I focused on correct sequence and the overall quality of my postures.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima focused on quality basics and applications.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata tuned into mobility and agility as well as correct sequence on the correct angle.

Lucy, Nancy and Read came for class. I received a text from Jack letting me know that he couldn't make it this morning.

I started by talking about "light energy at the crown of the head" (Zhong Ding) I explained the concept in depth.

Next we did a round of The 10+ explaining a little while we practiced. I had already talked about having an intention or purpose for practicing a particular 'thing'. Why? I also talked about the principle of 1. Do This 2. Don't do That and 'What moves and what doesn't move?"

Next we did a Round (right side) I recited my version of The Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into having relaxed balance throughout the Round, especially during the kick sequences.

We finished with a brief Standing PT and Healing Qigong.
