Modern Arnis Knife Disarm #4

Here is a brief explanation and short practice of Modern Arnis Knife Disarm #4 with Sifu J. R. Roy and Sensei Jeff Chaisson.
Sifu was first introduced to Modern Arnis Knife Disarms back in the early 1990's when Prof. Presas would sit in and occasionally teach a bit of Modern Arnis to his American Karate students.

The Prof. observed a bunch of Sifu's classes during that time period. The experience was memorable, especially when he would stand up and teach the group. Usually he would teach Trapping Hands but occasionally he would share his Knife Disarming knowledge.

The Prof. had numerous practical experiences disarming an actual opponent.
The Prof. DID NOT encourage knife disarming!

The Prof. told me "You will be cut"!!

These techniques are last ditch efforts and meant to teach some possible actions to take IF the opportunity presents itself.

ALWAYS try to DE-ESCELATE and DEFUSE a potentially violent situation.

ALWAYS!!

The best time to cultivate and balance you Chi - During the Sunrise -

Just before Sunrise, at Sunrise and just after Sunrise is THE best time to cultivate and balance your Chi.

So get up early, find a spot where you can witness the Sunrise then stretch, exercise, Tai-Chi, Qigong, Yoga, Walk or Jog....Whatever you'll DO!
Just Do It!

*Strive to develop an extraordinary appreciation for nature! It's the real teacher and it's everywhere;^)

This was my view from this morning...

Take a moment to be still and breathe deeply.
ENJOY Your Practice!

Exercises for finger and hand health: To Open the Joints using Opposing Movements & Self Joint Locking for Health

One of the main goals for health is to train for more space in all the joints, as opposed to exercises that compress the joints or close them. One of the first goals in Qigong/Neigong training; Your joints (sometimes referred to as 'gates') are opened. Releasing all tension in the soft tissue, from head to toe;

"Ice to Water, Water to Gas"

When the joints are 'opened' Synovial Fluid can optimally enter the joints. Synovial Fluid is the bodies natural lubricant for the joints. Too much tension closes the joints. Only with proper relaxation/release will the joints open.
The traditional sayings are:
"Hang the muscles, Open the joints"

"Muscle down, Bone up"
In this video I'm also sharing a few Self Joint Locks for Health. I have more in this series. Check back!

Modern Arnis Strike 1 and 2

Sifu Richard and Sensei Jeff demonstrating a give and take exercise off strike 1&2
After establishing a 1&2 feed from Jeff, I start using a reinforced block, then after the block I insert a 6&7 poke (or strike) and answer his counter with a reinforced block.
Note: A properly done 1&2 strike has a hidden block in the retraction to the other side.
Quite magical it is;^)
As you can see this drill will easily progress into Tapi Tapi - Counter for counter - give and take drill.
Enjoy!

Tensegrity is the path to Elastic Power

This is an excerpt from Anatomy of Drumming by John Lamb

"Tensegrity

One of the key concepts in understanding how the body moves is how forces are delivered through the body. To understand this, you need to understand tensegrity. Tensegrity structures are formed of hard, compressible parts held together by constant tension. In the body, the bones are the compressible parts and the muscles and connective tissue (white tissue) are the elastic bands providing the tension.

It is important to note the difference between tensegrity structures and compression structures. The classic example of a compression is a brick wall. In a brick wall, the weight of the top brick is delivered directly into the bricks below. Each element in a compression structure is designed to be compressed. When comparing tensegrity and compression structures there are multiple advantages of tensegrity structures: mobility, strength, lightness and interdependence.

Persistence is essential in order reach higher levels of refinement....No matter the endeavor!

 Dripping water hollows out stone,

not through force but through persistence.

Heaven, Earth and Man Qigong

This is a Qigong that I learned from my Bagua Zhang and Qigong teacher, Master Zhang Jie.

It's the introduction to the Bagua Zhang Sets that I learned from him back in the late 1980's.

This traditional method of connecting to the Earth, Universe and Nature has had a profound impact on my Qigong practices.

I often reflect on these ideas while I'm practicing.

Especially while Qigong Walking in nature.

Deep bow from the waist.

Modern Arnis training in my backyard this morning.

I worked with Gary on basics for Anyo Isa (empty hand form #1) and Anyo Dalawa (empty hand form #2) and then we moved on to review Block, Check, Counter drills, triangular stance work drills and ended with a review of Abaniko Double-Action.

Really great to have a partner to work with.
