Bagua Zhang 1st Yin Fu Set, Change #2
JRRMAS Staff members BL and WF along with Sifu demonstrate the First Yin Fu Set, Change #2 on both sides, with 8 steps (Lion Stepping) in between the Changes.
Lesson:
Note that the beginning and end of Change #2 is identical to Change #1
Change #1 is the Foundation for Change #2
which is the Foundation for.....
and so on.....
Whenever you are able to notice the 'common denominators'
to multiple movements;
Apply more significance to those!
If they are in-common
to the majority of the postures/gestures......
Then you are practicing more than one posture
More than the posture that you are currently working on....
If your able to 'see' the aspects that are common to all postures.....
The Principles
The 'yield' from your practices will quadruple!

American Karate-Do, Crescent step, block and punch drill
JRRMAS Staff member JK leads the adult Karate-Do group in classical basics (retracting hand going to the hip for the rear elbow strike)
Lesson:
Crescent step...
feet come close together
to protect the groin
while advancing forward
at the moment the rear foot
shuffles to
the new Seisan Stance
Focus your Reverse Punch (classical vertical punch from the rear side)
or focus your block
Then Reverse Punch
At either end of the Studio
Triangle Step
to turn around
with power.
This drill builds dynamic root and stability, coordination and basic mind/body connections needed for Martial Arts and overall neurological conditioning. Rows of basic stepping, blocking, puching/kicking and turning are an intergral part of many Styles of Martial Arts.....it's the foundation of the Kata's and the basis for more advanced practices.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan Solo Form Part Two
Sifu and the morning class demonstrate part two of the T'ai Chi Ch'uan Solo Form, from Cross Hands up to and including Wave Hands Like Clouds. (I'll be posting the entire form in 6 parts)
Lesson:
It's the adherence to the 'principles'
described in the T'ai Chi Classics (Jings)
that makes it T'ai Chi Ch'uan,
not merely moving slowly.
We move slowly
to allow enough time to adjust
the postures
and the transition,
in order to 'infuse' them with the 'principles'
and to help us Meditate
with our minds focused on our breath
we adhere to the principles
eventually....we achieve the correct 'feeling'
...and finally we forget about all that
and just dance with the universe!

Personal Safety Seminar at Greenfield High Shool for Senior Girls
Yesterday two JRRMAS Staff members JK and CG and I presented a Seminar on Personal Safety at Greenfield High School for a group of 20 girls who are preparing to leave for their first year away at college. This is one of the Personal Safety techniques that we introduced to them. Our main goal was to get them talking to each other about personal safety and get advice from their older peers on what they do to stay safe. We also encouraged the college freshmen to seek out resources on Personal Safety where they go to college and either join a Karate or Self-Defense class or take a specific class on like a 'model mugging' program etc. In order to ensure that you have the physical skills for self-defense they need to be practiced and rehearsed to be available and effective under the stress of an attack. There is NO substitute for regular practice of skills (any skills)!
The main idea we presented to the group was awareness of your surrounding and the people that you are with. The importance of setting personal limits with yourself and others. Getting carried away during freshman year is common. Try to remember it's your first time away on your own, and with the newness of it all, it's easy to get carried away and possibly off track.... remember why you are there...to get an education. Stay committed to getting that!
We stressed the importance of 'self regulation' and accountability for your actions. Know who you are going with before you go anywhere with them. Drinking, drugs and driving don't mix.......Saying NO is not just about sex!

T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Pushing Hands, Master Cheng Man-Ching Method
This lesson includes some basics and a few of the finer points of Pushing Hands practice. This is the horizontal version of Pushing Hands, developed by Master Cheng Man-Ching, that uses the four techniques of push, press, roll back and cross hands, (ward off). An interplay of Yin/Yang, sensing balance, center line, body angle and positioning relative to each other. Positioning and angling is very subtle in both T'ai Chi Ch'uan and Bagua Zhang
Big loss, big gain
Small loss, small gain
So
Invest in loss
Do not contend with their force
Just
Go with the flow
The main technique is to off balance ones attacker
physically
and mentally
Give them more of what they want
Allow them to off balance themselves.......
Then issue on the proper line
with whole body power!

Little Dragons Class meditating
The Little Dragons being led through a lying meditation at the end of class. These students are the youngest students at the Studio (4-6 years old).
Lesson: Regular meditation helps one to develop impulse control and teaches the use of Breath Control to adjust negative emotions, especially feelings of fear and anxiety during stressful times....and of course to control negative emotions such as anger and bad temper/attitude. A must for all serious Martial Artists...no matter what age you are!
Adults Meditation Practice at JRRMAS is a Standing Post Meditation derived primarily from the I Ch'uan (I=Mind and Ch'uan=Boxing/fist) System. We have several 'Sets' that are practiced at the Studio from several of the different Masters that Sifu has trained with over the years. More on the importance of cultivating a daily Meditative Practice to come!

Seisan Kata 2 - American Karate-Do Kata's
This is the second take on this demonstration of Seisan Kata - taken by my friend and co-producer at GCTV JB - the first take below is with my little Olympus 7.0 on a tripod, someone did come along and pan left to get me back on the screen...thanks BL!
Please refer to the text below for the 'lesson' about how to practice a form/kata while learning the sequence.
Seisan Kata - American Karate-Do Kata's
Sifu demonstrates Seisan Kata the second form in the American Karate-Do System - this demonstration is performed slowly, without focus (Fa-Jin), with a slight pause at the end of each posture/gesture to make it easier to see the sequence and the detail.
Lesson: When learning a 'form' always pay more attention to the detail of the final position of each postures/gestures than to power and speed. It's like practicing a drum rudiment or a scale on a melodic instruments...if you do not know the 'pattern or position' yet....what exactly would you be speeding up?
Going slowly and stopping momentarily at the end of each posture (up to a few minutes in each posture) will give you the time needed to become aware of what your doing and to adjust your body position accordingly. The main things that should be attended to are: 1. Balance 2. Structual alignment (Bones) 3. Muscular tension 4. Breathing. Pausing momentarily will also give your body and mind enought time to absorb the feeling of a more correctly positioned posture. Your body and mind are like hot tea water and the position/gesture are like the tea itself...your body and mind will automatically become 'infused' with the posture as you hold it.
This method will give you the best results. As time goes on in order to 'upgrade' your Kata's you will also need to be able to withdraw the power and speed and again return to going slowly and stopping at the end of each posture in order to have the time to 'see' and then change the old way of doing it and replace it with the 'new' upgraded version. The process of refinement continues .......forever!

Youth American Karate-Do - practicing kicks to focus pads
A couple of Little Dragons (4-6 year olds) graduates working with staff and senior students in our regular youth program.
NOTE: The attention that is paid to them when they are young is invaluable. It allows them to be able to pay that quality of attention to others as they get older and they themselves get in the position of being the 'senior student'. A true 'rite of passage'
NOTE: We often have a one to one ratio of Staff and seniors to junior students at JRRMAS

Self-Defense policy @ JRRMAS
Just a few words concerning the Studio's Self-Defense policy.
We seek peaceful means to resolve conflicts.
Success in self-defense is not winning a fight, but avoiding it in the first place.
Remember the following continuum:
If you can't prevent it, avoid it.
If you can't avoid it, defuse it.
If you can't defuse it, escape.
If you can't escape, you may have to defend yourself .
If you do have to defend yourself, it will always be as a last resort, and only under the direct threat of physical harm, countering with the least amount of force necessary to subdue the attacker.
(A highly trained person can use joint/locks and takedowns to control the attacker with no lasting damage.)
Modern Arnis - reverse sinawalli application with backward throw
JRRMAS Staff member JK demonstrates a reverse sinawalli application flowing into a short locking series with a backward throw takedown, follow up on ground with a goose neck lock transitioning to a thumb lock for controling your partner to a standing position and finishing with a come along.

My first J. R. Roy Martial Arts Blog
Hi everyone...I'm creating this blog to archive some of my martial arts ideas, photos, videos and teachings.
Lesson 1:
My first thought about Martial Arts
is simply that practicing is a 'way of life',
it's something that you do daily (or almost daily),
for as long as you are able to.
Lesson 2:
This brings me to the idea of practicing itself
and what can be learned from successfully developing a life long daily practice.
Cultivating the capacity to practice X many day's in a row.
Just to be healthy enough, physically, mentally and emotionally to be able to!
Lesson3:
The actual goal;
A celebration of human existence....
reveling in it.....
contemplating it...
truly experiencing being alive!
At the JRRMAS we study the human experience through the daily practice of martial arts. We practice internal & external martial arts, weapons, qigong and meditation (I Ch'uan)
"We are spiritual beings having a human experience"
Unknown
"It's simple.....Cultivate a curiosity about developing a daily practice"
