Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 55 at the house. The Kayne from Lynde's Well is here to replace the Artesian Well Pump. Ugh! Get out the checkbook! Kayne just recommended a water softener because the old pump had calcium deposits.

The Practice:

I started in the driveway with a round of Taiji Double Dao (Broadsword) using my wooden Dao. I focused on shoulder and knee health as well as the correct sequence and direction of postures.

Next I did a round of Taiji Jian using the wooden Jian that I got from Scott Rodell. I chose it for the additional weight. I recited the names of the postures throughout the form.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health, balance, breathing and leg strength.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into the benefit of 'slow and smooth' and used my breath to enter into a calm state of mind.

Next I did a brief round of SPT

Next I did Healing Qigong

I finished with a round of Yin Fu Baguazhang's Linking Palm Set (changes 4-8) around my Bagua Poles. I focused on consistency and the quality of my postures. I also focused on what was moving and what was still, using my inner palm over the center pole and tuning into the middle finger staying stationary as I walked the circle.

I finished by taking a photo of the daffodils that are doing extremely well this year.

Master Wai-lun Choi Pa-Kua demo

Tuesday Practice at The Studio

The Details:

It's 46 at the house. I plan on going into The Studio to teach the 8:00 am Taiji and Qigong Class. I had a response from 4 students that were planning on attending and two of them cancelled out at the last minute and I ended up with two students for the class; Jack F. and Lucy it was great to have folks to talk to about what I've been working on and great to do a round with students that practice and know the sequence of the form.

The Practice:

I started with Jack talking about the topics below. I had sent an email to myself so I had that to refer to. That worked out great.

Topics for Taiji Class this morning:

- Correct thinking

- Consistency tops Intensity

- Feel the earth/floor pushing up against the bottoms of your feet. Follow the Jin upward along the 9 Zig Zag Path.

- Abdominal Breathing - The key is in and out through the nose with the tip of the tongue against the hard palate (roof of the mouth). The abdomen is active the rib cage is passive, keep the rib cage directly on top of the pelvic floor. (Breathing in the heart enlarges, breathing out the heart becomes smaller). TLB (Taoist Longevity Breathing) stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) = Calmer and more relaxed state of mind. Feel the floating ribs move to the sides. Keep the chest from lifting, but rather expand the entire rib cage in 360 degrees, especially the floating ribs and back.

- Express Jin in the fingertips (even if it's an external movement to begin with)

After presenting the above material for consideration we did a round of The 10+ focused on adjusting the mind set to reflect the principles and functional exercises that help in daily life and encourages longevity.

Next we did a Round (right side) I recited my version of the Taiji Classics during Part I. I encouraged using neutral postures and observing the 'space' between the postures. I pointed out that the form is more about transitions from posture to posture as opposed to actually training the postures.

We ended (out of time) with Standing Post Training and Healing Qigong.

Monday Practice

Master Paul's and my tea cups overlooking Beaver Meadow

Next I did a round of Standing Post Training (SPT) and Healing Qigong

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima focused on sequence and consistency. ( I mistakenly did Anyo Apat yesterday)

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on agility and mobility. I also tuned into the proper sequence and direction (mapping) of postures. I had to do the last section twice in order to get it correct.

It's 47 at the house with a stiff W S/W breeze....Brrr!

The Practice:

I started in my main practice area with a full round of The 10+ focused on health, leg strength, coordination, breathing and consistency.

With the low temp and stiff breeze I found in too cold to continue so I went inside The Barn to do a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I I focused on "Neither Severance nor Splice" attentive to the end of one posture and the beginning of the next. I also focused on opening and closing my spine throughout the Round.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Practice

Tuesday - After visiting Mom in Jacksonville and driving 600+ miles (Oy!) we finally arrived at our hotel in Wilson NC where I did a Round (left side) focused on consistency and health

Wednesday we only drove 450 miles (or so). I had started my Round (right side) in the morning at the hotel in Wilson NC but needed to finish the round in the hotel room in Borden Town NJ. I was focused on being consistent and getting the Round in. Not the best Round I've ever had but I got 'it in'!

Thursday final day of travel. Traveling through NYC was terrible. Ugh! The only good thing is the fact that I don't have to travel through there very often. Combat Driving at it's worst!!

I waited until we got back to Leyden to do a Round (left side) in my main practice spot by Big Greenie.

Again it wasn't the best round I've ever had (late afternoon and stressed out from the drive through NYC and the various problems here at the house) but I did 'get it in'. I was mostly focused on consistency and de-stressing.

I'm hoping tomorrow will be better! Yay, we are home!

Sunday, April 13, 2025

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 61 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:01. The high tide was at 9:18. There was enough of a breeze to keep the no-see-ums away! Yay!!

NOTES:

There were a gaggle of teenage girls gathered to witness the sunrise (it was a pretty good one!) and of course take photos of each other to post on social media. I also saw Rocko and Nancy to say hi to.  I also waved at Kim (the woman that introduced herself and he Granddaughter Brook yesterday) who was walking with her family just south of where I was exercising.

The Practice:

I started with an almost full round of The 10+ focused on consistency, leg strength and coordination (internal and external).

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat tuned into quality basics and applications.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata focused on mobility and agility.

Next I used my wooden Bokken to do a round of Taiji Cane form tuned into health and mobility.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

NOTE:

I saw the 'girls' (from Indiana) leaving the rental at the end of our street.

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 66 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:02. The high tide was at 8:38. I've got appointments this morning. The truck (Big Bertha) is scheduled to go to Stewart's for an oil and filter change at 8:00 and then exchange it with the Honda Passport for the same service.  I also have an 8:30 video call with Jeff. Busy morning!

Note:

I met Kim and her Granddaughter Brook on the beach. Then I saw the dog walkers and stopped to talk to Shadow and Nancy.

The Practice:

I started off with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and health. I notice a marked improvement on #9; my legs, hips and thighs are getting stronger and more agile. Yay! FYI - Consistency is the key! Surprise, surprise!

Next I did a Round (right side) focused on using neutral postures throughout.

Note: Kim and her Granddaughter Brooke came over to chat when I finished the round. Kim (from Michigan) told me that she has seen me practicing Taiji at sunrise for years and finally decided she would come over and introduce herself.

I stopped practicing there because I wanted to get back to the house in time to get the truck to Stewart's.

Thursday Practice

Sunrise with a visible riptide. The tide was up and there was very little beach to practice on.

The Details:

It's 69 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:05. The high tide was at 7:13. A steady breeze coming out of the N N/W plus the high tide kept the tourists off the beach.

Note: I had a brief chat with Dave and Tonya when they first got down to the beach to walk north. There were very few folks walking the beach, no bikes and no runners!

The Practice:

I shot a few photos with my phone then I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on staying consistent. I've been really putting some effort into getting a full round of The 10+ in. It's so healthy, but ya still have to do them on the same sort of schedule and oral hygiene, i.e. Daily.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on using neutral postures throughout the Round.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima focused on the correct sequence, postures and applications.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on mobility and agility. This Kata and Kusanku demand a high degree of mobility and agility.

Next I did a round of Taiji Dao using my wooden Bokken. I focused on the health aspect of this form.

Next I did a full round of Modern Arnis Cane Anyo (1-4) on the right side.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

Wednesday Practice

I made it down to the beach for sunrise this morning. Yay! It took a supreme effort! Oy!!

The Details:

It's 69 at the house and quite windy on the beach. The sunrise was at 7:05. The high tide was at 7:13. There was very little beach to practice on and only soft sand or quicksand near the waters edge.

The Practice:

I started off taking my blood pressure inside, before I ate or drank anything. I got the lowest readings to date; I guess what I'm doing (a lot) is starting to work? At any rate I'm going to keep up with my routines, the best I can!

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health and well being. The wind and soft sand made balancing challenging.

Next I did a Round (right side) focused on expressing Jin with my finger tips and feeling the earth pushing up against the bottoms of my feet. I had a profound connection to the Atlantic Ocean.

Next I did a brief Standing session.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on full extension and balance.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata tuned into the quality of my basics and stances.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

Tuesday, April 8, 2025

It's 69 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:06. The high tide was at 6:27. There was a steady breeze coming in from the N N/W making it a little cool. I could have used another light layer. Oh well, the drizzle and clouds keep the riff raff away! I noticed Dave and Tonya walking the beach this morning.

NOTE: I'm planning on driving up to Jacksonville this morning to visit my Mom.

Tai Chi applications

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:07. The high tide was at 5:35. I'm moving a bit slow this morning. The current news and politics are weighing heavily on me. Oy Vey!

The Practice:

As the morning went on, I decided to practice out in the backyard, instead of the beach.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health.

Next I did a Round (right side) I focused on staying in the moment but I still had a couple of times that I goofed up and had to backtrack in the sequence and remind myself to 'stay in the moment'.

Next I did a round of Taiji Staff, Monkey Staff and Lo Family Staff, focused on correct sequence and direction of postures and well as consistency. I had a few issues with balance and agility on the grass. I've noticed a marked decrease in mobility, agility and relaxed balance this season. I've been working on it but you just can't outrun father time! Oy!

Next I did a short stint of Standing and Healing Qigong

Next I moved back onto the patio and did a round of Anyo Dalawa focused on more snap and focus on my punches, blocks and kicks.

I finished with a round of Seisan Kata tuned into full extension, focused (Fa Jin) and timing of my punches, blocks and kicks.

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 71 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:08. The low tide was at 11:04. Very light breeze this morning, just enough to keep the no-see-ums away.

The Practice:

I started inside with reading a poem from Mary Oliver's book 'Evidence'. I'm moving a bit slow this morning and after deciding where I was going to practice, I decided on the backyard, mainly because the beach has been full of tourists lately and I'm a bit sick of the intrusion of folks walking, running and riding past me way to close.....I'm appalled at the lack of consideration. I'll give them the benefit of doubt; Most know not what they are doing.

After going out to the backyard and setting up the umbrella for shade I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on health and consistency.

Next I did a round of Taiji Jian using my wooden Jian. I recited the names of the postures throughout the form.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. It was challenging to stay on the right side and at least once I had to adjust because I had inadvertently switched (don't know where) to the left. I didn't over react I simply switched back to the right. It's one of the things that happens once you have both sides 'feeling' the same. It's good and challenging all at the same time!

Next I did a short Standing session

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa focusing on the quality and pop of my punches. I also used light body during the progressive stance sequence with more of a leap than I generally use, focused on agility.

Next I did a round of Naihanchi Kata tuned into the chambering of the angle kicks as well as the changes that I've made to this Kata.

I finished with Healing Qigong before returning to the house for breakfast.

Next I did a full round of Standing Post Training using the Taoist Training Method of doing the most difficult postures (overhead) in the middle and ending (and beginning) with the easiest. I also tuned into abdominal breathing, alignment and Song.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito (I realized that I did Anyo Walo yesterday, so I interchanged them) I did the Anyo close to the seawall at Ocean Condos for privacy a and had a challenging time keeping the sequence and direction of postures straight. I did pretty well, but not perfect. It was challenging!

The Practice:

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on loosening up my body. I felt a bit tight from the resistance training I did on Monday and Wednesday.

Next I did a Round (right side). I couldn't remember which side I did yesterday, but about half way through I realized it might have been the right side? I generally default to the right when it's not clear. I focused on No Mind, not overthinking and using a meditative state of mind to observe without interfering.

Next I did a short round of Standing.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on spirited punches and full extension on kicks for stretch and applications.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

There was a slight breeze from the south, enough to keep the no-see-ums away! Yay!!

The Practice:

I QW to the beach just before sunrise. It was warm and foggy on the beach with just a slight breeze from the south, enough to keep the no-see-ums away! Yay!!

After snapping a few photos of the sunrise I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on overall health and consistency.

Next I did a Round (left side) tuned into expressing Jin in my finger tips and using my spine closing and opening as well as focusing on 'Whole Body Power'.

Next I did a full round of Standing Post Training using the Taoist training method of putting the most challenging postures (overhead) in the middle. I focused on the details of the postures and connecting profoundly to nature.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima tuned into the sequence and applications.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on agility, balance and stretch.

I finished with Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.

Tuesday Practice - Day 8,676 -

The Details:

It's a warm 69 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:14. The low tide was at 6:07. There was no wind at all in the backyard, thus lots of no-see-ums! Ugh!! On the beach there was a slight breeze from the west, just enough to keep the bugs away...I guess? It was significantly better on the beach!

Elizabeth stopped to chat briefly.....I haven't really seen any of the other 'regulars' walking on the beach at sunrise this season. But then again I haven't been going out for sunrise until recently. Oy!

The Practice:

I started in the backyard with a round of The 10+....The no-see-um's were so bad (even with natural bug spray)  that I decided to walk to the beach for the rest of my morning practice.

It was better on the beach. Once I got down there I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part II. I focused on cultivation with the ocean for a calm and centered state of mind.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on the correct sequence and direction of postures.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata tuned into agility, mobility and health.

I finished with Standing and Healing Qigong as I was returning to the house.
