Saturday Practice

From yesterday's QW on the Beach. Interesting clouds and a (dead) washed up Sea Otter.

The Details:

It's 57 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:14. The high tide was at 7:16 (3.1'). It's forecast to be much colder starting tonight, tomorrow and Monday morning. I had a 10-11 video meeting with Jeff this morning.

Notes:

It's forecast to be the coldest (25) tonight. If it does that will be the coldest that we've ever experienced down here in Florida. It's -4 in Leyden. We are very concerned with the freezing cold in Leyden. We're concerned about pipes bursting.

The Practice:

I did a full round of The 10+ inside focused on consistency and overall health.

Next I went outside to do a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I remained focused on " Muscle Down, Bone Up" throughout the Round.

That's all I had the juice for this morning. I'll do more later today on my late afternoon QW.

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's a little warmer this morning. It was 57 at the house. It's forecast to be much colder starting tomorrow evening and on Sunday night it's forecast to go down to 25. If it does it'll be the coldest we've ever seen here. It's already the coldest season for us in the past 10 years. Brrr!

Notes:

I slept in again this morning. It's just been too cold and it's warm and cozy, too cozy in bed. The forced hot air is hard on the sinus's. I think that has been a major contributor to this upper respiratory crap that we've been having a hard time to clear. Ugh!

I did this workout as Day 2 or 3 in the rotation. I've needed to mix it up a bit.

The Practice:

I started inside with strength training; A TRX session (Pull and Push),  15 lb Dumbbell session for #8, Curls, Bent Over Rowing and Tricep Extension. 10 lb session for Shoulders (Around the Heads).

Next I went outside and did a full round of The 10+ (including Ba Shi) I was focused on consistency and not overthinking just doing them for overall health.

Next I did a round of Anyo Dalawa tuned into using quality basics, sequence and light body.

Next I did a round of Naihanchi Kata focused on the changes that I've made to this Kata. I also focused on the chamber before the angle kicks.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics. I remained focused on "Hang The Muscles, Open The Joints".

Next I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang 8 Linking Palms Changes 1-4 (both sides) reciting the names of the postures throughout the set.

I returned to the house to journal today's practices.

Thursday Practice

 The Details:

It's 42 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:15. The low tide was at 11:56.

Notes:

It's still cold and even colder in Leyden. I'm getting some very low readings from the camera's up there 31 in the kitchen and 37 in the loft.

The Practice:

I started inside with a round of the 10 Exercises and strength training for #8 I also did the 3 swings and Song Gong for #10.

Next I went outside to do a Round (left side) focused on feeling Jin coming up from my feet to my arms and fingers.

That was all I had in me today. I had a hair cut with Tonya at 10:30

I Qigong Walked (QW) on the Beach in the late afternoon. The sights, sounds, feel (wind), salt air and smells are truly a gift. It was cool with a mild north wind.

I did mobility training at the mid point and stretching and incline push ups (I've added 'pushing off' to my routine) on the 21st Ave Walkover. On the beach I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang 8 Linking Palms Changes 1-4 (both sides) reciting the names throughout. I've borrowed some names from the 2nd Yin Style Form, I've also change how I'm doing #3 (Hawk and Bear Palm) to conform with that 2nd Form.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's a cool 41 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:15. The low tide was at 10:57. It's still cold but at least it's not too windy! Yay!! Still I dressed for the cold with earflaps, windbreaker jacket and gloves.

Notes:

It's slightly warmer that yesterday but still cold. We went out to So Napa for supper last night it was a cold walk there (we saw Nancy at the stop light to talk to). The meal (salmon) was good, we spoke to our back yard neighbors Sally and Jim briefly after the meal. They were in the booth right behind us. That was Ginnie's suggestion for good will and it was very good will.

We learned yesterday that George is probably choosing to stay back from going on the upcoming trip to the Maldives, although he is still negotiating. He needs to take care of his dental dilemma. If he stays behind Gerri will be going solo. Ugh! I really feel bad for George and it must be tough for Gerri too! It's a Catch 22 situation!

The Practice:

I started with a full round of The 10+ including the Ba Shi. I focused on overall health for a 74 year old; these exercises are crucial to maintain living independently.

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa adding a more focus and extension to my punches and kicks.

Next I did a round of Seisan Kata with the same focus as Anyo Isa

Next I did Cheng Style Baguazhang Yin/Yang Cirlcle Walking focused on No Mind

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Parts I & II. I had a bit of confusion about which side I was on at the start of Part III. I stayed equanimous and resolved the issue.

I came inside to eat lunch and journal today's practices.

Afterwards I did a round of Taiji Cane (right side)

Tuesday Practice

The Details:

It's a cool 34 at the house. A cold front came through yesterday and it's forecast to be a chilly week.

I slept in again this morning, resting trying to get rid of the last of this flu. I've still got a little croupy cough.

The sunrise was at 7:16. The low tide was at 9:54.

Notes:

I'll be practicing in the backyard this morning, once it warms up a bit.

I did a round of Cheng Style Baguazhang Old 8 Palms at the mid-way point of my QW on the beach yesterday. There was a very strong and cold north wind so I cozy'd up to the sea wall at The Pelican. The sand was drifting and soft, a little to soft for Mud Wadding Step so I used Lion Walking and turned my upper body towards the center of my circle. I also did mobility training and Dragons Back. I did a brief stretch on the walkover at 21st Ave.

We have dinner reservations at So Napa at 6 tonight.

Our dive pal George is having dental issues and may not be able to go on our upcoming Maldives Dive Trip. Ugh! I feel for him!!

The Practice:

I started inside with a brief warm up doing 20 Up and Down and 20 Tensegrity Swings plus 10 #1 and 10 #2.

Next I went outside (cold) and did a Round (left side) Parts I & II. It got too cold to Song/Relax so I finished inside with a Round of Part III.

That's all for today......

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 70 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:16. The low tide was at 8:49.

Notes:

There was a huge blizzard in Leyden starting Sunday afternoon. The temperature in the house was 28 before we went to bed and 39 this morning. It's very puzzling! The electricity is still working but the furnace seems to be problematic. I've put in a call to Dave Hellus (oil burner guy) and texted Jeff. I'm not sure what to do? Oy Vey!!

There's a very heavy rain in NSB this morning. I'll be practicing in the backyard again after the rain has passed.

Jeff saved the day, we were on the phone and discovered that the batteries in the thermostates needed to be changed and that was causing the problems with the furnace. After replacing all the batteries it seemed that the furnace was working just fine...Whew!

The Practice:

I started inside with a full round of The 10 exercises with added resistance training at #8 (dumbbell and TRX Straps).

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I continued to focused on my whole body being and integrated whole, so whether advancing or retreating, moving left or right I'm able to obtain a superior position using neutral postures that are readily able to transform energy through Alignments, Song connective tissue and a Balance of Shen, Yi and Qi.

I returned to the house to work things out in Leyden with Jeff, eat lunch and journal today's practice

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 62 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:16. The low tide was at 7:45.

Notes:

I slept in again this morning, resting and giving myself time to recover from this flu/cold. I still have some chest congestion. I'll be going out to the backyard to practice later this morning.

I've been checking in on the IMSA scoreboard for the Wheelen #31 car place in the Rolex 24. This morning they are in 9th place a lap behind the leader the #6 Porsche. I just looked again and #31 is in 3rd place at 12:30! Go Wheelen!!

The Practice:

I went out to the backyard in the late morning to practice.

First I opened the large red umbrella

I started with 29 reps of Up and Down and 20 reps of Tensegrity Swings followed by #1 and #2 from The 10 Exercises.

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo tuned into the quality of my Punches and Kicks observing if I'm fully extending to Muscle Lock and adding more focus and speed.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on my Breathing and Dynamic Tension

Next I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang 8 Palms Changes 5-8 (both sides) reciting the names of the postures where I could.

Next I did a Round (left side) focused on staying (attention) on the left side throughout. As I tune into observing the principles without consciously enforcing them, I've been having a tough time attending to which side I'm on

Next I did a brief Standing Meditation and Healing Qigong

I returned to the house to eat lunch and journal today's practices.

The Practice:

I started with a Cane /Stick Warm Up focused on remembering the sequence and developing hand, wrist and forearm strength.

Next I a round of all four Modern Arnis Cane Anyo's. I did 1-3 on both sides and did #4 (right side only) three times in order to end facing the same direction I started in. My goals were to not overthink and to be equanimous when I found myself ending in the incorrect direction

Next I did a round of Anyo Anim (right side) I just realized I should have done a round of Anyo Pito or Walo. Oy Vey! When I started this rotation I didn't realize how challenging it would be.

Next I did a round of Sunsu Kate focused on using the correct sequence and techniques.

full round of The 10+ including Ba Shi ect. I focused on Consistency for Overall Health and releasing fascia and connective tissue.

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 59 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:17. The low tide was at 5:48.

We're still fighting off this flu. It's a stubborn one! Very hard to clear. I slept in again this morning. I'm trying to rest more, drink more green tea and eat well.

The Practice:

Yesterday late afternoon QW on the beach I did mobility stretched at the mid-way point and again on the Walkover at 21st Ave.

Next I did a round of Anyo Anim focused on applications.

Next I did a round on Kusanku Kata focused on mobility and agility as well as correct sequence.

Next I did a brief warm up

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused using a calm, centered mind.

I returned to the house to eat lunch and journal today's practices.

Thursday, January 22, 2026

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's a warmer 59 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:17. The high tide was at 11:00 (2.6').

Notes:

I'm still wearing the Sea Sickness Patch with no apparent side effects. I slept in again this morning. Ginnie is relapsing with this flu/bug thingy. Ugh! She's very discouraged, me too!

The Practice:

I did a full round of The 10+ (without Ba Shi) with a weighted vest and dumbbell routine at #8.

Next I did a Round (left side) I inadvertently switched side a few times. It was mostly due to a lapse in concentration. I've noticed that as I get deeper and deeper into the 'Feeling' and observing that I'm tending to switch sides. It's a little frustrating but I continue to work on being equanimous and simply switch back as soon as I notice. There are more and more spots that I can notice which side I'm on. I've successfully trained both side's to feel exactly the same. It's become more problematic than I originally thought.

I stopped to go to Heath's to pick up soup and a sandwich for lunch along with some other provisions for the sick girl.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 59 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:18. The high tide was at 10:21 (2.7').

Notes:

I slept in again this morning. I'm trying on The Sea Sickness Patch today, in preparation for the upcoming Maldives live aboard. It was tricky! I need to shop for a smaller waterproof band aid to go over the patch. Oy Vey!

I did a late afternoon QW on the beach I did mobility training and the Dragon's Back at the mid way point and then  I did a round of The 21 along with mobility training and inclined push-ups, on the Walkover at 21st Ave.

Ginnie is going to Mt. Dora this morning to meet with her cousins Brenda and her daughter Laurie.

The Practice:

I did a full round of The 10+ inside without the Ba Shi. I added a dumbbell routine and used a weighted vest for the Warm Up and The Round.

Next I went out to the backyard and did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I

Next I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang 8 Palms Changes 1-8 (both sides) reciting the names of the postures throughout. I focused on mobility and Lion Stepping, rolling my feet and feeling the three points (triangle).

Tuesday, January 20, 2026

Notes:

It's Peg Gilson's Birthday in heaven today. She was born in 1914 and would have been 112! We are both still fighting off this flu. Ugh! It's hard to tell what to do. I had a very busy day.

Lori is coming this morning. She texted twice that she would be late.

The Practice:

I started inside with 15 lbs dumbbells for a variation of #8, followed by 10 lbs for shoulder "round the heads" and deltoid .

Next I went out to the back yard and did a brief Warm Up. Using a few of The 10.

I wore a 10lbs weighted vest for the outside training.

Thursday, January 15, 2026

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 59 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:19. The high tide was at 6:17 (2.7').

Notes:

I did Anyo Lima and Cheng Style Baguazhang 8 Animal Palms Changes 1-4 alternating sides and 5-8 (both sides) yesterday late afternoon on my Qigong Beach Walk. Outside of doing a Round a day, I've been changing around when I do my other Forms practices. It was starting to feel too restrictive and lending itself to 'getting it done' and reducing the Shen in my practice of those Forms.

The Practice:

I went out to the backyard in the late morning. I started with a full round of The 10 Exercises.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I.

In the late afternoon I did a QW on the beach and did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang Changes 1-4 (both sides) reciting the names of the postures throughout. I also did a round of The 21 and stretches on the Walkover at 21st Ave.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 61 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:19. The high tide was at 5:32 (2.6'). It's a forecast to get very cold tomorrow evening. There's a frost warning for central Florida!

Notes:

I've decided to practice on the beach at sunrise today. It's been awhile and my main concern is to get back to sunrise practices.

The Practice:

I started with a modified version of The 10 Exercises: 10 reps of 'Tensegrity Swings', 10 reps of Up and Down, #1-4.

Next I did a Round (right side). I'm not used to the 'distrations' from the passersby on the beach. When I started Part III I mistakenly went to the Left Side. At Wave Hands I switched back to the right side. Oy Vey!

Next I did all 8 Standing Meditation postures and Healing Qigong. I've recently decided to go back to using 'Standing Meditation' as opposed to 'Standing Post Training' to describe the practice, even though SPT may be more accurate (historically). When I was first introduced to Standing by Master Paul Gallagher he used the phrase Standing Meditation to describe the practice.

I felt that was enough and returned to the house to eat breakfast, so I could take the last of my antibiotics (one more to go) and journal today's practice.

It felt good to do a Round on the beach at sunrise, although I was challenged by the 'quick sand' which made single leg balancing much more difficult.

Tuesday, January 13, 2026

Tuesday Practice

The Details:

It's 64 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:19. The low tide was at 11:11.

The Practice:

I started with a round of Taiji Staff on both sides, adjusting for the space available on The Patio.

Next I did a round of Monkey Staff (one side) focused on sequence.

Next I did a round of Lo Family Staff (one side) focused on proper sequence and postures.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat, I just realized that I actually did mostly Anyo Dalawa...Oy Vey!

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata. I was distracted by Josh and crew working on the landscaping at Janet's next door.

Next I did a Round (left side) focused on Feeling and Observing

Next I did a brief Standing Meditation

I returned to the house to eat lunch and journal today's practice.

Next I did a round of Taiji Dao tuned into sequence and pastures.

Next I did a round of Pa-Kua Knife focused on the correct sequence. I did really well right up to the very end, at that point my concentration wavered and I fudged the ending.

I went in to eat lunch (Ginnie ordered from Izzy's) and journal today's practices.

Tuesday Practice

The Details:

Its 61 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:19. The low tide was at 4:37.

Notes:

I'm still sick! I had a bad night, lot's of coughing up crap. Ugh! To say I'm tired of this would be an understatement. We are preparing the house for Lori to come clean. We found out this morning that she was coming 1/2 hour later which has caused us a little stress since we went to great lengths to prepare for a 9 am arrival. We're doing the best we can.

The Practice:

I did a minimal practice today.

I started with a brief Warm Up using the first few of The 10

I was mostly focused on consistency and "getting it in"

Next I did a Round (right side) tuned into overall health, circulation, balance and gentle stretching

Monday Practice

The Details:

I'm still sick! Ugh!! But I am feeling slightly better.

It's 62 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:19. The high tide was at 10:17 (3.1').

Notes:

I'll do a Round in the back yard again today. I'm not quite ready to practice on the beach.

I had a really good experience going to the local urgent care facility in the Publix Mall.

The Doctor prescribed an antibiotic and pregnizone

I did go for a brief QW yesterday afternoon. Today I went to Urgent Care instead.

The Practice:

I started with a slightly modified version of the original 10 exercises.

I focused on moving blood, Qi and lymph throughout the entire practice.

Next I did a Round (left side) but I realized about 1/2 way through that I should have done a right side round. I will tomorrow

Next I did all 8 Standing Post Training Postures and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Yin Style Baguazhang 8 Linking Palms Changes 1-4 focused on moving blood and lymph and stretching connective tissue.

Sunday Practice

 The Details:

It's 63 at the house.  The sunrise was at 7:19. The high tide was at 9:17 (3.3')

Notes:

I'm still sick! Ugh!! This thing is kicking my butt. The sore throat is interfering with my sleep and I have no energy, my Qi is at a low ebb; I'm having difficulty keeping my extremities warm. I'll be doing an abbreviated practice later today.

The Practice:

I practiced out in the back yard again this morning. I wore sneakers and found that it helped make the practice better than just wearing OOFO's! Surprise, surprise!!

I started with a brief Warm Up using a variation of Up and Down for 10 reps and the Up on the toes and Down on the heels for 20 reps. Followed by #1 and #2.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I had a much better round

Stretching for older Men (and Woman)

Stretches for Older Men (and Woman) to Decompress the Back (neck-sacrum) Groin, Hips and Knees. Open the hinges Backward….eliminates the upper back hump, relieves the Lumbar. Increases mobility of the Pelvic & Groin (Qua/Chinese).

My saying is: "You don't have to stretch all your joints, just the ones you'd like to keep"

I recommend The 10 Exercises. There's a link to me doing/teaching the 10 Exercises on this blog. Just look at the Labels under 10 Exercises. I have several versions of these that I do regularly.

Friday Practice

The Details:

I'm sick this morning so I slept in. It was 50 at the house when I finally got up at 8:00. The sunrise was at 7:18. The high tide was at 7:31.

Notes:

After sleeping in and eating breakfast I went out to the backyard to do a Round. The issue once you've developed a habit is that if/when you don't do it you'll feel like crap. The only way to feel better is to 'just do it' even if it's sub par. Today was one of those days. Hopefully I'll feel well enough to go out to the beach for sunrise practice. Those are The Best!

The Practice:

I started with a brief Warm Up using the first few of The 10

Next I did a Round (left side) I did Part I on the right side but realized I should be on the left side so when I started Part II I switched to the left side. I was mostly focused on stimulating my blood flow and Breathing. The goal being to move this illness through me. I'll be having a bowl of soup and then resting after I finish this journaling.

Thursday New Years Day Practice - Day 8,951 -

                                                              The first sunrise of 2026

The Details:

It's 44 at the house...Brrr! The sunrise was at 7:18. The high tide was at 6:35 (3.3'). It's the first day of the year.

Notes:

It was cold but with less wind this morning. There were a few hearty souls walking and jogging on the beach. I saw Marty (wearing shorts) and walked back with him. We wished each other a Happy New Year.

The Practice:

I started with a Round (right side) focused on Counter Balancing and Song. I also tuned into a profound connection with nature to cultivate nature's Qi.

Next I did all 8 Standing Meditation Postures and Healing Qigong.

Next I did Cheng Style Baguazhang Yin/Yang Walking using Lion Walking throughout with smooth transitions from left to right side.

Next I did Anyo Isa focused on full extension and Balance.

Next I did Seisan Kate using good quality Basics.

Next I did a round of Taiji Cane first on the right side and then on the left. The left side got a little wonky in Parts III and IV but I managed to finish facing the correct direction.

I returned to the house to fix and eat breakfast and journal today's practices.
