Fascia gets stuck

Fascia release from a Zero Balancing perspective.

Saturday Practice at The Studio

The Details:

It's 61 at the house and it's raining. I'm going into the Studio to work out with the 8am Taiji and Qigong Class.

The Practice:

I got to the Studio 1/2 hour early to work out with Jeff, but ended up having and impromptu meeting with Luke first then Jeff joined in just before 8.

Jeff led through Sifu Ray's warm ups. I need to work with him on The Dragons Back exercise to get the legs and hips involved in the exercise.

Next Jeff led through Standing (PT) I adjusted the "Palms Facing Out In Front Of The Face" posture as well as Holding The Moon.

Next Jeff led through Brush Knee and Twist Step and Wave Hands Like Clouds with a partner, applications drills.

Next Jeff led through a Round (right side). I talked to Jim F. about the importance of concluding a posture. Knowing when a posture concludes and becoming aware of the 'space' between the postures. Alternating moving (Yang) with not moving (Yin) in an endless cycle.

We finished with a brief Standing PT and Healing Qigong.

Volume 1: Single Cane Drill with Prof. Remy Presas and Sifu Lee Lowry

Tuesday Practice at The Studio

 The Details:

It's 46 at the house. It's sunny and forecast to reach the high 70's this afternoon.

The Practice:

I began by reading a poem from Evidence.

After driving into The Studio and unlocking the doors I started with a full round (both sides) of Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Animal Form tuned into consistency and overall health.

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo focused on agility, mobility and consistency.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata with Jack. I tuned into the correct sequence and the quality of my basics, stancework and variations at the end.

Nancy came in first, then Jack, Read and Janee.

I started by writing on the board then talking about;

"Hang the muscles, open the joints"

and The "Triangles,"

Especially the triangle that is formed by 'sitting' into the Kua.

Next we did a full round of The 10+ with very little explanation.

Next we did a round of Wuji Hundun Qigong adding the three 'tea cup exercises'. First I showed the shoulder exercise with the 5 lb dumbbell that I brought in and showed how the tea cup exercises are good for shoulder health. Wuji Hundun Qigong is excellent for hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck health. One needs all those parts to work well in order to be physically able to wield a sword (one of the original reasons for practicing this set).

Next we did a group Round (Part I on the left, Parts II & III on the right.) I recited the Taiji Classics during Part II.

Next I did a brief Standing (PT) and Healing Qigong. Filling myself with emptiness.

Next I did a full round of The Dance with Jack. We did both sides focused on correct sequence and direction of postures.

The Practice:

I'm moving a bit slowly this morning. I went out on The Deck around mid-morning to practice.

I started the day by reading "Heart Poem" from Evidence, once again I was reminded about the temporary nature of life and the need to appreciate and to be grateful for each and every day and breathe.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ focused on correct thinking and consistency.

Next I did a Round (right side) pausing at the end of each posture to check for alignment and Soong in Part I.vI recited the Taiji Classics during Part II. I focused on TL Breathing and slow and smooth movements throughout the Round.

Next I did a round of Cheng Style Baguazhang's Old 8 Palms, I flushed out the proper sequence and image/names of postures. I used Mud-Wadding Step throughout the round. Doing one change on both sides on the correct place of the circle.

Next I did a round of Anyo Dalawa tuned into agility, mobility, applications and correct sequence.

Next I did a round of Seisan Kata tuned into timing of step and punch, agility, mobility and consistency.

I finished with Healing Qigong and journaling my practice in this blog.

If you're reading this please let me know, pop me and email...Thanks!

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I noticed I had changed sides at the end of Part II so I simply switched back to the left and did the rest of the form without any challenges.

Next I did a round of Anyo Isa focused on flow and adding more speed and focus.

Give and take joint lock series with Sifu J. R. Roy and Guro Phil R.

Sifu J. R. Roy's Modern Arnis Introduction

Saturday Practice

The Details:

It's 50 at the house. I don't have anything scheduled for today, just all my regular practices.

The Practice:

I started by reading "Yellow" from Mary Oliver's book of poems "Evidence". Yellow is the first poem in the book, this is my fourth time reading this book. I've often started the day with reading one poem; it seems to be positively adjusting my general appreciation for life and nature.

Next I did a full session of acoustic guitar practice. It's coming along slowly. I continue to be consistent, spending a little time every day practicing. My main focus has been playing everything that I know 'cleanly' (paying close attention to inadvertently muting strings) and using a thumb pick.

I went out on The Deck around mid-morning to practice. I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on observing internal principles throughout the round. I also contemplated the concept of 'filling a bucket, one drop at at time (per day)'

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I observed from a meditative perspective throughout the form.

Next I did a full round of Yin Style Baguazhang's 8 Linking Palms focused on consistency and the correct sequence and direction.

Next I did a round of Anyo Walo focused on sparking up the Anyo with speed, full extension and focus.

Next I did a round of Sanchin Kata focused on abdominal breathing connecting it with the twist punches, finger and palm strikes.

I finished with Healing Qigong and journaling my practice in this blog.

Modern Arnis Abaniko Double Action with Sifu Roy

Modern Arnis Strike 1 and 2 with Sifu and Jeff

Friday Practice

                                                                         Big Greenie

The Details:

It's a chilly 45 at the house. It rained overnight but it's not raining now. It's Friday and I have a standing video meeting with Jeff at 8:30.

The Practice:

I went out to my main practice space to practice in front of Big Greenie around mid-morning.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on breathing in fresh air and connecting to serene and peaceful energy emanating from the forest all around my training spot. I contemplated my connection to nature throughout the round.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting my version of the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on cultivating the calm and serenity that was all round me. I tuned into breathing in the fresh air.

Next I did a full round of Cheng T'ing Hua Baguazhang's 8 Animal Form. I tuned into consistency and how that is essential to get the health benefits of practicing this set.

Next I did a full round of Anyo Pito tuned into the correct sequence. I had a challenging time but I think I got it after a few takes.

Next I did a full round of Sunsu Kata tuned into agility and mobility. I had some challenges to the correct sequence right at the end of the kata, I realized that I should do forms with the same orientation in order to get the cues for what direction the movements should be in. I believe I started this kata from a new orientation and that is what was confusing at the end. Oh well!

I finished with Healing Qigong and journaling my practice in this blog.

If you're reading this please drop me an email and let me know if and how it may be helping you. Thanks!

Thursday Practice

The Details:

It's 46 at the house...Brrr! Good for sleeping;^) There is a wall of rain coming in shortly. Wayne and Ba arrived last evening.

The Practice:

I started inside (downstairs) reading "Another Summer Begins" the last poem in Mary Oliver's book "Evidence".

It's raining and cold so I went upstairs to The Loft to practice.

I started by reading from William C. C. Chen's book about breathing and the practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ focused on what I was thinking about and consistency. I also contemplated the reality of adding 'One Drop Per Day' and the accumulative effects of practicing regularly. It may not always feel like you're making progress but the reality of consistent effort is still the ONLY way.

Next I did a Round (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on One Drop at time and the cumulative effects of daily Taiji Rounds. It's easy to loose sight of the slow, insidious effects. When you maintain good health it can be difficult to access the necessary appreciation to continue. It's easier to take it for granted. But the reality is; good health in your 70's is a gift and a product of all you've done + luck + genetics = good health and pain free movement in your final decades.

Note IMHO:

The A team exercises and eats & drinks sensibly.

The B team doesn't!

Next I did a brief Standing (PT) and Healing Qigong.

Next I did the first three changes to Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8 Animal Form (1. The Lion Opens It's Mouth 2. Snake Palm 3. Bear Palm) on both sides.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat focused on applications and sequence.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata focused on agility and mobility. This is a tough form to do as you age; there are so many Zen Dashi's and low single leg stances.

I'm finishing by journaling my practice in this blog.

Please email me if you're reading this. Thanks I appreciate the feedback!

Using opposing force to stretch and open fingers, hands, wrists, elbows ...

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 50 at the house. It's forecast to be cold for the next few days. Wayne and Ba are arriving later today. I'll be checking in with Jean and Paul about a visit, perhaps tomorrow?

The Practice:

I started on The Deck with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health.

Next I did a round of Yin Fu Baguazhang 8 Palms (full set, both sides) I added the 'kick ups' to #1-4 and did # 3 several times.

Next I did the first two changes in Cheng Style Baguazhang's 8  Animal Form that I'm currently sharing with Jeff.

Next I did a full round of The Wild Goose Qigong (I need to review this more often). It's a lengthy and complicated set, healthy and so good for you. I feel fortunate to still be able to do it and that I remember it as well as I do. I suspect that's from the regularity that I did practice this set in 1990's. Bow to Master Zhang Jie for sharing it with me.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting my version of The Taiji Classics during Part I. I focused on health, stretch, strengthening, balance and TL Breathing.

Next I did a brief Standing PT and Healing Qigong.

Next I did a round of Anyo Lima focused on agility and applications.

Next I did a round of Chinto Kata focused on mobility, agility, stretch and strengthening.

I finishing with writing about the practice on this blog.

Tuesday Practice at The Studio

Needle At Sea Bottom - A drill that Jeff used for World Tai Chi Day.

The Details:

It's 58 at the house. I'll be going into The Studio to teach the 8:30-10:30 Taiji and Qigong class this morning. Then I have a guitar lesson in Colrain with Shubal at 11.

The Practice:

I wrote on the board:
1. Sequence (external)

2. Refine (towards the internal)

Both take repetitions. There is no other way.

Internal practice is like filling a bucket, one drop at a time! Perseverance is essential to success!

I started with Jack reviewing The Dance sections 1-5 as we started 6 Ruby and Read came in. I had already heard from Janee and Nancy that they had doctors appointments.

Next we did single hand push-hands with Ruby and just started on moving forward when Read came in.

Next we did a full round of The 10+ with very little instruction, focused on identifying and then separating Yin/Yang.

Next I reviewed and explained the intro to Wuji Hundun Qigong then we did the first discreet exercises that I learned at the grange in Greenfield. Then we added the ending. Next week I plan on reviewing and adding the Tea Cups.

Next we did the beginning movements to the Taiji Solo Form pausing at the end of the postures for Ruby.

After the third iteration we went on to finish the form. I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I.

We finished with a brief Standing (PT) and Healing Qigong.

I had some conversation with Read in the hallway.

Monday Practice

The Details:

It's 50 at the house....Brrr! It's a forecast to be a very cool week. Nature's air conditioning?

The Practice:

I went out to The Deck to practice around mid-morning.

I started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health.

Next I reviewed Wuji Hundun Qigong focused on the sequence of the introduction and the discreet exercises that I could remember. It's been too long since I've reviewed this set. I especially like the 'tea cups' and the first one I learned from Master Duan at the grange all those years ago.

Next I did a Round (left side) tuned into cultivating the peaceful and serene natural setting. I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I.

Next I did a full round of Yin Fu 8 Linking Palms (both sides)  that I learned from Dr. Leung during the summer of 1979. I think the 'kick ups' at the beginning of each change are worth the price of admission.

Next I did a round of Anyo Tatlo focused on agility and applications.

Next I did a round of Seiunchin Kata focused on sparking it up.

I finished with Healing Qigong

Sunday Practice

The Details:

It's 60 at the house. It's sunny at the moment but the forecast is to be raining by noon. Jeff is scheduled to arrive at 10 for a private lesson.

The Practice:

It started to rain so I went out to The Barn to practice before Jeff came at 10:00.

I started with a very brief warm up and then did a Round (right side) to Master T. T. Liang's music with him counting out the beats. I lost the sequence towards the end of Part III. I got back on track with equanimity. The 'lost' part happened a few times. I got back on track but it wasn't the best Round I've ever had. Oy! I guess I was a little distracted thinking about the upcoming meeting with Jeff.

After Jeff arrived we worked on Cheng T'ing Hua Baguazhang's 8 Animal Form.

First we worked on the Mud Wadding Step

Next we worked on the Introduction to the 8 Animal Form.

Next we worked on the first Change: The Lion Opens It's Mouth.

Next we worked on Yin Fu 8 Linking Palms.

Next we isolated #3  from the 8 Linking Palms, flushing out the Roll, Wrap and Drill.

We finished with some discussion about The Studio and the concept of closure.

The Practice:

I went out to practice on the Deck.

Next I did "Lion Opens It's Mouth" on both sides a few times. I'm preparing to share this change with Jeff tomorrow morning during his private lesson.

Next I did a round of Anyo Dalawa focused on health, agility and applications.

Next I did a round of Seisan Kata focused on health and consistency.

I finished with Healing Qigong and journaling this practice in this blog.

We've got the sailboat all ready to drive to the lake, set the mast and cover her in the boatyard.

Wednesday Practice

The Details:

It's 58 at the house. It's cloudy but not raining. Yay!

The Practice:

I started by reading a poem from Evidence and finger style guitar practice.

Next I went out to my main practice area and started with a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency, overall health, relaxed balance, separating Yin/Yang and coordination.

Next I did a full round of Standing Post Training (SPT) using a 1 minute stop watch per posture. I focused on:

1. Anignment

2. Soong

3. TL Breathing

4. Calm, centered state of mind (equanimity)

Next I did a full round of Cheng T'ing Hua Baguazhang's 8 Animal Form. I did all 8 changes on both right and left sides. I had a glitch on #8, but think I worked through it.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part II. I had a glitch at the end of Part II. I didn't react but handled the glitch with equanimity. I simply changed orientation and began Part III on the left side where I remained for the rest of the form. I considered this a win! Remaining in a state of equanimity during a glitch contributes to developing an abominable spirit; one of the main goals of all Martial Arts training.

Next I did a round of Anyo Pito focused on sequence, direction of postures, overall health and agility.

Next I did a round of Sunsu Kata focused on correct sequence and consistency.

I finished with Healing Qigong and writing in my blog about this day's practice.

Please email me feedback if you are reading this....Thanks!

Saturday Practice at The Studio

The Details:
It's still cold, wet with rain forecast once again. Ugh! I plan on going into The Studio to support Jeff and co-teach the Taiji and Qigong class from 8-9:30.

The Practice:
I led the group through The 10+ that I practice daily. I tried to not explain (time restraints) what I was doing internally (you can't see it). I did pretty well; As the set went on, I did talk about Song, opening and closing the Kua (inguinal fold), as well as using the waist to control movement of hands and feet. Where it was most appropriate (the "two cent" version)
Next we did a full session of SPT (Standing). I gave a one finger inquisitive push as well as adjusting students posture; what I noticed is the upper body leaning forward as well as the head held too far forward.
We also talked about TL(Taoist Longevity)  Breathing. Abdomen is active (Yang), the rib cage is passive (Yin).
Next we did a group Round (right side). We all started together then Jeff broke off with Ruby (new student) to work on the beginning sequence. I recited The Taiji Classics (my version) during Part II. We ran out of time so I started to increase the pace about 1/2 way through Part III.

We finished with questions and conversation.

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 54 at the house. I have an 8:30 video meeting with Jeff and a scheduled call with Sifu Ray. It's still wet, cold and rainy. Ugh!

The Practice:

I started with reading a poem from Evidence. These poems help me to tune into a greater appreciation of nature and life itself. With gratitude and appreciation.

Next I went outside and did a round of Baguazhang - Yin Fu's 8 Linking Palms around my Bagua Poles.

The addition of 'kick ups' as I'm doing 'The Wild Goose Leaves The Flock' I find very helpful for remaining upright and mobile.

Next I did a full round of The 10+ focused on consistency and overall health.

Next I did a Round (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I tuned into observing the whole body aligned and Song and feeling Peng Jin rising up from the earth, mobilizing through my bones. I also focused on TLB (Taoist Longevity Breathing) in and out through my nose.

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat tuned into the sequence, applications and mobility/agility.

Next I did a round of Wansu Kata focused on adding more focus to fully extended punches, strikes and kicks.

I finished with Healing Qigong and journaling my practice's

By the end of this practice session there were 1/2 dozen deer resting and/or grazing in full view just south of my property line.

Next I presented the details regarding basic Taiji Stepping and did several rows of stance work focused on relaxed balance and neutral postures.

Thursday Practice - Day 8,706 -

The Details:

It's 44 at the house. I've got an appointment with Bay State Audiology in Greenfield and a 1 pm service for Mike Sexton at Beaver Meadow Cemetery. Busy morning!

The Practice:

I set up my bluetooth speaker coupled with my MP3 player in The Barn so I could practice to Master Liang's Taiji Music with him counting.

No warm up today just a Round to the music focused on No Conscious Thought and staying with the sequence. The count and music keeps you honest. I had to pause at the end of Part II and when I came back to finish Part III I had a little trouble staying with the count at the end. I used the trouble to practice equanimity.

Next I did a resistance training session using TRX Straps and dumbbells.
