Wednesday Practice @ Paul's

The Details:

It's 53 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:14. I'll be driving down to Paul this morning. I've got the boy'z coming 2-4 to play music.

The Practice:

I started in The Driveway with a brief warm up using the first few of The 10

Next I did a Round of Taiji (left side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I was focused on consistency.

After driving to Hatfield I met Read in Paul's driveway and we went inside to meet with Paul.

Paul immediately stood up and was ready to start training.

We did:

- We started with push and pull while standing

- We segued to single are push hands

- Next we did hand exercises; open/close and palm up/palm down and fingers touching for proprioception.

- Next we did side stepping; ala Wave Hands Like Clouds

- Next we did several seated exercises. I heard from Jean that the fall that Paul had last week an x-ray showed a hairline fracture to his right hip. He doesn't need an operation, but because the hip is weight bearing he is supposed to limit weight bearing.

- Next we walked with Paul using a walker. I noticed he was challenged by turning around and negotiating the walker when he attempted to sit down in a chair.

- Next while he was seated we worked on ankle with toe and heel lifts.

- Next we did knee lifts.

It's all about functional exercise for all of us as we age. As time goes on daily exercise is almost entirely about being able to continue to function as we always did in daily life.

Once you lose your mobility it's the beginning of the end.

Keep moving!!

Tuesday Practice @ The Studio

The Details:

It's 56 at the house. The sunrise was at 7:13. I'll be going in to teach the Taiji & Qigong class from 8-9:30 this morning. It's my last Tuesday morning class until May 2025.

The Practice:

When I got to The Studio I opened up and started with a round of Taiji Double Dao Form using wooden broadswords.

First Jack then Janee showed up and we started with a review of The Taiji Dance focused on embodying the principles. Jack and I did part IV multiple times to develop our skills. I talked about the difference between working on the sequence (1st step) as compared to working towards embodying the principles inside the sequence. One way to refine your techniques to this level is to 'loop' short sequences.

Next we did a round of The 10 + tuned into The Principles.

About 1/2 way through The 10 Read showed up.

After The 10 we did a Round of Taiji on the left side during Part I and then the right side during Parts II and III. I recited the Taiji Classics during Part I

After class I did a couple of rounds of Taiji Jian with Janee, Read and Jack.

We finished with Lazy D on the left side and talking about "neither severance nor splice"

Friday Practice

The Details:

It's 40 at the house. It's forecast to be warmer today. Yay! The sunrise was at 7:08. I've got a 8-9 video call with Jeff, a guitar lesson at 1 and music with the boy'z from 2-4. Busy day!

The Practice:

I started in The Barn with strength training using my TRX Straps, Dumbbells and Push-Up Bars.

Next I went on The Porch to do a round of The 10+ up until #9 and then I went out to my main practice area  to do a round of Yin Fu Linking Palms around my Bagua Poles.

Next I did the Three Swings and Song Gong for #10

Next I did a Round of Taiji (right side) reciting the Taiji Classics during Part I. I felt a profound connection to nature with a TSOM (Tranquil State Of Mind). I was focused on the principle of Counter Balancing and Swimming In Air.

Next I did a brief Standing Post Training (SPT) and Healing Qigong

Next I did a round of Anyo Apat (#6) tuned into the sequence and applications.

Next I did a round of Kusanku Kata focused on consistency, health and agility. The form has many opportunities to practice Zen Dashi Stances, thus the agility that can be derived from continual practice of this Kata as we age.

I'm finishing my practice by writing about it. I've successfully been able to get writing into my daily routine, but I have to say I have that developing the habit write daily has proven to be more difficult than I originally thought it would be. Ha! Like every other pursuit...First it's new! Then it's not new...Then is regular and ordinary. This is the point in the pursuit that you start having inner conversations with yourself questioning whether your are making fast enough progress, because it feels like you're going backwards at times and you become more and more impatient. If you are able to continue to work on 'it' you have the chance of 'it' becoming extraordinary. You will have developed a skill (or an understanding) that takes little to no conscious effort. It will become easier and easier with less and less effort. IF you are able to persist and continue to study (research) and practice.

We seek to make our practice more and more perfect realizing that perfection is fleeting, so do the best you currently know how to and when you learn a better way, do better. Accept imperfection, but still try for perfection. The best you can.....FYI - This must be in balance in order to continue.
